GOAT SHOW RULES 

A. 4-H entries must be made according to the printed 2026 Custer County Fair Premium Book and entered online by 5:00 p.m. on June 26.  Instructions for online entries will be emailed to 4-H families on approximately May 15.  

B. ARRIVAL TIME- All meat goats will be weighed in at the Custer County Fairgrounds on Sunday, July 26, 2:30 - 3:30 p.m.  All goat entries must be in place by 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 26.  

C. NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR-A 4-H member may exhibit three dairy goats and/or three total meat goats (market and breeding combined).  If showing dairy and meat goats, meat goats will be stalled with dairy goats.   

D. SHOW SCHEDULE-The 4-H Dairy Goat Show will be held on Wednesday, July 29, at 1:00 p.m. followed by the 4-H Meat Goat Show.  

E. MEAT GOAT I.D.-Official 4-H ownership affidavits (4HF111) will be considered the official list of eligible meat goats.  All meat goats exhibited at the Custer County Fair, MUST be tagged with an official USDA scrapie tag. 

F. BEST DRESSED GOAT (Dairy & Meat Goats Combined)-Exhibitors are encouraged to use their imagination to design a costume for their 4-H goat kid. The attire should emphasize the personality of the animal. 

G. All dairy goats to be shown that are under one year of age must have been born before June 1, 2026. 

H. All milking Does must be milked by hand at designated times during fair. 

I. Full blood or percentage meat goats will be shown together. 

J. SHOWING & HANDLING PRACTICES-The use of showing and/or handling practices that may be considered objectionable or abusive, such as striking or slapping goats and exhibiting the goat with its front feet off the ground, are not acceptable. Goats may be braced but will require that all four feet are on the ground. The use of such practices may result in the lowering of a ribbon placing. (Lifting the goat in a fluid motion to set the front legs prior to quickly setting the feet back on the ground is acceptable.)  

K. AGE-Meat goats are to have milk teeth and there shall be no evidence of breaking of the skin or eruption of the two permanent front teeth, except for breeding doe class. 

L. MEAT GOAT ELIGIBILITY FOR 4-H LIVESTOCK AUCTION-To be eligible for the 4-H Livestock Auction, meat goats must weigh 50 lbs. or more. 

M. MEAT GOAT CLASSES-Market does may not be shown in the breeding doe classes or vice versa. 

N. All goats must be stalled in the designated goat barn. 

O. All dairy goats must have official USDA identification with the scrapie eradication program (scrapie tag).   

P. No bucks allowed. 

Q. To be eligible for a group class (i.e. Mother-daughter or Junior Herd) each goat must be entered in an individual class. 

R. Dairy Goats must have their breed declared on their ID sheet. They must exhibit the breed characteristics of that breed as defined in the American Dairy Goat Association Breed Book. If their breed is not in the ADGA breed book, discretion will be left up to the goat superintendents. 

S. Senior dairy does will need to be fresh. If they are not in milk production they will be deducted a ribbon placing and will not be eligible for special awards. 

 

GOAT SHOWMANSHIP - Showmanship will include dairy goats and meat goats combined.

MEAT GOAT 

CLASS G159010 Market Wethers - weighing 50 pounds or more 

CLASS G159020 Market Does - weighing 50 pounds or more 

CLASS G159021 Pre-Market - less than 50 pounds.  Wethers and does will be shown together. 

CLASS G159022 Market Goat Bred and Born.  Limit of one entry per exhibitor and this entry is within the limitations of the number of goats (meat) allowed at the Custer County Fair.  Goat must be shown in other market class, this is an additional class to show the goat.  To be eligible for the Market Bred and Born class, the exhibitor or exhibitor’s immediate family (including grandpa/grandma) owned the female, which is the mother of the market animal project, at the time of conception, and that it was born and fed on the exhibitor’s farm/place of 4-H project care. 

 

Proof of Exhibit will be:  11” x 17” Poster to Display on Top of Pen 

Poster Requirements: 

  • Two photos (1) Newborn and (1) Later photo 
  • Include: Birthdate & Birth Weight 
  • Show a Pedigree of current animal with Sire and Dam 
  • Exhibitor is open to decorate the poster  

 

Judging will be done by the Judge. Bring Poster to Ring with Goat.

A Pee Wee Goat Lead Class will be held at the conclusion of the Goat Show.  This will be a class for pre-4-H’ers to lead a goat, with the aid of the owner, and receive a ribbon.  Goats used for the Pee Wee Goat Lead Class must be goats that were shown at the Custer County Fair.  Premium money is not awarded for this class.
