Department G, Division 42 - Hog Carcass Contest

Carcass data will be collected on all hogs (over 230lbs) each exhibitor enters and ranked on the estimated percent lean of carcass weight. Each exhibitor’s highest-ranking hog will be used to determine carcass contest placings.

Basis for Placing in Ribbon Groups - To reflect industry standards, carcasses are grouped into ribbon   groups based on the factors of live weight, 10th rib fat thickness from ultrasound measurement, loin eye area from ultrasound measurement and percent lean calculated from these factors.

Purple: Live weights of 245 to 290, fat thickness of .50 inches or greater, loin eye area of 10.0 square inches or less, and percent lean of 56.0% or greater.

Blue: All hogs not meeting the requirements for purple with weights of 230 to 310, fat thickness of .40 inches or greater, loin eye area of 11.0 square inches or less, and percent lean of 54.0% or greater.

Red: All carcasses not meeting the requirements for purple or blue with weights of 230 to 330, and percent lean of 52.0% or greater.

White: All other hogs not meeting the requirements above.

Special cash awards will be paid to all entries meeting minimum contest standards as follows: 1st - $15.00; 2nd - $12.00; 3rd - $10.00; 4th & 5th - $8.00; 6th & 7th - $6.00; 8th-10th - $5.00; 11th-15th - $4.00; 16th - 20th - $3.00; 21st and up - $2.00.
