PRACTICES: Practice dates and locations will be announced in the 4-H newsletters. If there is a possibility of bad weather, contact the shooting sports instructor for postponements or cancellations. (Eric Fuchtman at 402-394-8201)

REQUIREMENTS FOR BB GUN AND AIR RIFLE: Each member must attend at least two (2) practices each year with a certified leader to shoot at the official contest. 

EYE PROTECTION: In order to participate, shooters must wear eye protection for all practices and the contest. 

FIREARMS: 

  • BB guns are defined as: any spring gun or air powered gun that shoots BB’s. Must be smooth bore, weigh 6 pounds or less, will be shot at 5 meters (16 feet 4 inches). No scopes allowed.
  • Air rifles are defined as: any hand pump .177 caliber air rifle that shoots pellets, and has rifling in the barrel, will be shot at 5 meters (16 feet 4 inches). No scopes allowed.

Rules for Firearms Brought to the Fair:

            1. They meet the criteria mentioned in the definitions above.

            2. All firearms need to be clean and in good working condition.

            3. All firearms must be unloaded and on safety.

4. A responsible adult must bring each firearm, preferably in a case or box, straight from the vehicle to the range, checked in immediately and returned straight to the vehicle following the competition.

5. Each firearm needs to be marked with the member’s name with tape on the stock.

KNOX COUNTY OFFICIAL CONTEST:

  • The official Knox County Competition for BB Gun and Air Rifle will be held on Wednesday, August 12 at 3:00 pm in the Harm & Tulleys Event Center on the Knox County Fairgrounds in Bloomfield.
  • Important: All members will be observed by the leaders and if the leaders feel the member is not capable of properly handling the firearm, they will not be allowed to shoot it.
  • Scoring of Targets for BB Gun & Air Rifle: When scoring the target, the main hole from the shot must break the point line for the higher points to be awarded.
  • Trophies and Ribbons: Ribbons will be awarded to all participants and the top score in each class will receive a trophy. The point divisions may be adjusted by the superintendents or the extension educator. The suggested point divisions for the BB gun and Air Rifle are as follows: Purple 400-226; Blue 225-151; Red 150-76; White 75-0. 
  • Fees: A $5.00 fee will be charged for each 4-H member to participate in the contest. The fees will be paid to the Extension Office with the fair pre-entry forms.
