Youth Visits to ENREEC

VISITING ENREEC - 2023

Take a brief look at some of the educational opportunities provided to youth at ENREEC. Youth learn onsite at at the center and livestock sometimes travel off-site to provide agricultural education opportunities to youth learners in other settings.

Youth Crop Scouting Competition

Youth Crop Scouting Competition

Area 4-H and FFA groups competed at the youth crop scouting competition sponsored by Nebraska Extension and the Nebraska Soybean Board. The regional contest was also conducted at ENREEC. Youth crop scouting teams from Nebraska, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa and Minnesota competed for the regional title.

4H Programs

4H Programs

4H provides opportunities for youth to "learn by doing". Youth need opportunities to learn by doing, grow from failure, express their ideas, and use their influence to drive positive outcomes. That's why hands-on projects are an integral part of the 4-H experience. Nebraska Extension provide youth programs at ENREEC, such as workshops, camps and other "learn by doing" opportunities.

ASABE Future Engineers Day

ASABE Future Engineers Day

As part of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) International Convention in Nebraska, youth had the opportunity to visit ENREEC for Future Engineer Days and participate in interactive, hands-on activities while learning about agriculture and possible career ideas.

State FFA Livestock Contests

State FFA Livestock Contests

Some of the livestock from ENREEC make the the trip to UNL's East Campus each April where they play an important role in the Nebraska FFA state livestock evaluation competition.

Mobile Beef and Science Labs

Mobile Beef and Science Labs

The Husker Beef Lab provides hands-on experiences for students in middle school and high school. The Husker Beef Lab is a 24-foot interactive mobile trailer that brings a fistulated steer to schools and ag-literacy community events. Youth are able to feel an active rumen with a fistulated steer. The Husker Beef Lab experience teaches students about science principles through a ruminant animal - its complexities and what makes the ruminant truly unique in the environment and ecosystem. The overarching goal of the Husker Beef Lab experience is to teach Nebraskans the value of, and support the production of, high quality, protein beef animals. The trailer and steer are headquartered at ENREEC, along with the mobile science lab. A second trailer and steer are located at the University of Nebraska West Central Research, Extension and Education Center.
