COAD: a community disaster organization looking for volunteers

An opportunity for community organizations and individuals to learn more about aiding their neighbors during a disaster event will be held on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at ESU 13 in Scottsbluff. 

The Community Organizations Active in Disaster, or COAD, is a collaborative network of community organizations, agencies, individuals, businesses, and non-profits working together to minimize the impact of disasters.   

“It’s plugging these groups into getting communications and aid when a disaster happens, and mass care is needed,” said Ashley Hopkins, administrative assistant, Region 22 Emergency Management, Scotts Bluff County. “We’ll help volunteers with CERT disaster training and tie into FEMA training and networking with others.”

Nebraska Pesticide 2024 Training dates announced

The first of several private pesticide applicator training dates will be held on January 3, at the Nebraska Extension Crop Production Clinic, at 8:30 a.m. at the Gering Civic Center. In Gering, private pesticide license holders and those seeking a first-time private pesticide license may recertify. The cost of the clinic is $95. Pre-register at http://agronomy.unl.edu/cpc. 

The 2024 private pesticide and chemigation applicator training dates and times are set to be held from January to March in several locations. Notification letters will be sent out by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture (NDA) to applicators whose licenses will expire in 2024.

2023-2024 Martha and Don Romeo Scholarship Application

The Nebraska Association of Fair Managers will award a $500 scholarship to one qualifying 4-H male and a $500 scholarship to one qualifying 4-H female who are graduating seniors in the state of Nebraska and who plan to continue with post high school education. The scholarship will be awarded at the annual NAFM convention in January. The application can be found at https://www.nebraskafairs.org/newsletters.php.

Extension to Host 2023 Price Management Workshops for Cattle Producers

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability and Nebraska Extension will host a series of price risk management workshops for cattle producers in Franklin, Trenton, Rushville, and Bridgeport. Attendees will learn strategies designed to reduce risk exposure to achieve a profitable outcome in uncertain times.

Current cattle industry issues will be discussed to help producers make informed decisions.

Harvest and irrigation outlook for fall in western Nebraska

Harvest in the Panhandle is progressing well, although some crops are behind in harvest. Winter wheat for the 2024 growing season has been planted since mid-September, and emergence is looking good at this time.

 The sugar beet harvest started in September and is in full swing. Harvest should be completed by the end of the month. Cooler weather is required to help prevent overheating in the sugar beet piles and reduce pile loss. The estimated harvest tonnage is 28 tons per acre, with a sugar content of 17.5 percent. Producers are paid for the sugar produced. Some fields were affected by Cercospora leaf spot this season, leading to a decrease in tonnage and sugar content.
