How to Show a Cat Guide

ARRIVAL TIME: The cat project will be entered 15 minutes before the Cat Show on Thursday, August 7 which starts at 2:00 pm. The cats can be taken home following the conclusion of the Cat Show.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR - An exhibitor may make two entries.

AGE OF CAT: Cats must be 4 months of age and older to be shown.

HEALTH: Cats should be free of fleas, ticks, ear mites, ringworm, any internal and external parasite and infectious disease.  Cats are required to be current on their vaccinations of Rabies, panleukopenia, viral rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus. Cats must either have a current feline leukemia vaccination or proof of a negative test within 180 days of the show.  Proof of vaccinations must be presented at check-in.  One of the following is required as proof of vaccination: veterinary health certificate with a veterinarian’s signature or a vaccination printout or vaccination receipt from a vet clinic. 4-H members vaccinating their own cats must provide proof by including a statement from their vet or by including the vaccination labels on a form signed by a parent.  A rabies vaccination is federally mandated to be given by a Certified Veterinarian ONLY. This vaccination must be current and printed on a veterinary clinic report. 

If the cat is not declawed, the claws must be clipped.  This will be a point of judging during competition. No expectant or nursing mother cats may be entered in the show. 

ALL CATS MUST BE SHOWN ON A LEASH and be on a leash at any time they are removed from the carrier/cage. Cats should be brought in carriers. Cats will remain in carrier except for when being judged.

CAT SHOWMANSHIP

Champion and Reserve Champion banners will be awarded to the first and second place purples in each division. Purple, Blue, Red, and White ribbons will be awarded to all participants.  The Showmanship scoresheet can be obtained from your county extension office. The scoresheet includes the following point breakdown: cage/bench area - 15 points, exhibitor - 10 points, handling of animal - 15 points, presentation - 30 points, knowledge - 30 points (15 from test and 15 from judge’s questions).  Cats and kittens will be shown together in showmanship. Kittens must be at least 4 months old in order to be shown.

  • Senior Cat Showmanship (14 & over on December 31 of previous year)
  • Junior Cat Showmanship (11-13 on December 31 of previous year)
  • Novice Cat Showmanship (8-9-10 on December 31 of previous year)
