Agriculture in southeast Nebraska is changing rapidly, creating new opportunities for both traditional and alternative farming. There is a great potential for those willing to take risks and invest time in small-scale ventures like vegetables and flower farming. These alternative enterprises can thrive with careful planning and dedication.
As of July 19, southern rust has been confirmed in several counties in Nebraska, including the eastern and central part of the state. This year, the disease development occurred earlier than usual and has spread further north than it typically does.

Enrollment and re-enrollment for the 2024 4-H year. All 4-H youth and volunteers will enroll in clubs and projects through 4HOnline, a web-based enrollment system that will allow families to enroll on a personal computer or mobile device.  Re-enrollment deadline to participate in County or Sate Fair is Jun 15th, 2024. 4-H (ages 8-18) as of Jan. 1st of the current year who exhibit beef, goats, sheep, swine, rabbit, and poultry MUST complete quality assurance training through YQCA (Youth for the Quality Care of Animals) by June 15, 2024 to be eligible to exhibit at the County Fair, State Fair, or at the Ak-Sar-Ben Stock Show. Clover Kids ages 5-7 DO NOT need to complete quality assurance training.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Center for Agricultural Profitability will present a 2024 landlord/tenant cash rent workshop at seven locations in central and eastern Nebraska between Aug. 13 and Sept. 4. One of the workshops will be presented locally in Nebraska City.
Gardening is so much fun and can bring joy to everyone who passes by your garden. It is also a great way to get outside and be active. If you are one who enjoys gardening and would like to learn more about it, you might be interested in the Extension Master Gardener program.

Summer camp brings cattle, history, and STEM to campers

A metal fence separated a few boys from a bunch of cattle as they looked at each other. Nodding their heads, the boys agreed it would be nice to take one of the cattle back home with them. The boys were part of the Summer Youth Empowerment Camp, which brought more than 30 children to visit the UNL Panhandle Feedlot and the UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff on July 24.
