Participating in 4-H contests helps teach youth a life skill that is beneficial for a lifetime in their personal and professional lives by developing their communication skills. Youth learn how to: plan and organize, set goals, think critically, solve problems, be self-motivated, express themselves clearly, present ideas logically, research subjects, and emphasize key points. They become more confident and learn to compete positively.

Clover Kids, children ages 5–7, can participate in non-competitive activities where they receive participation ribbons. Their work is not judged but celebrated as an educational experience.
