DOGS (DEPARTMENT G)      

Dog Show - Friday, July 25 at 9 a.m.

Exhibitors are limited to 2 dogs per exhibitor for 4-H & FFA. The same dog cannot be shown in both 4-H & FFA.

The exhibitor may select the obedience class best suited for his dog, except dogs with the AKC “Companion Dog” degree may not compete in the Beginning Novice Obedience class. Those with “CDX” or UD” degree must be shown in the Obedience class (open).

All dogs must be immunized for Rabies, DHLP and Parvo virus. (Flu vaccination also recommended but not required.) They must be up to date. All dogs must be on a leash, kept under control and in the Dog Show Area. NO SHOTS, NO SHOW. Exhibitor must provide written proof of vaccinations. Health papers due in Extension Office before the fair.

DISQUALIFIED DOGS: Females in season will not be permitted to be shown. Lame or crippled dogs will not be permitted to show if it is determined by a show superintendent that it is affecting the health of the dog. All substitutions of dogs must be done prior to the start of the show. Dogs may be substituted only if the change does not affect the class pre-entered.

HANDLERS DISQUALIFIED FOR ABUSE: Dogs will not be abused (hit, kicked, or endangered by running loose or exposed to excessive amounts of heat and sunlight putting the dog at risk for heat prostration) by the handlers or others. If this is observed before the handler shows, they will not be allowed to show. If this is observed after they have shown, all placements — ribbons, trophies, etc. will be withheld. Disqualification will be determined by adults involved in the competition.

AGE OF DOG: A dog that is exhibited must be 6 months or older.

BAITING: Baiting with food or a toy is not permitted and is cause for disqualification. Handlers may use baiting action without food or toys. The judge has the authority to disqualify violators.

EXHIBITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY: CLEAN-UP shall be the EXHIBITOR’S RESPONSIBILITY. This includes all areas while on the Fair Grounds. *Possible disqualification or premiums being withheld if cleanup is not done.

SHOWMANSHIP CLASS: Each class will be judged on handler’s appearance (10%), grooming and conditioning of dog (20%), coordination of the dog and handler (50%) and general knowledge (20%).

DEPARTMENT G - DIVISION 881

Grand Champion Dog will receive $4. Reserve Champion Dog will receive $2.

Class:

970.  Beginning Obedience -- All exercises performed on a leash.  Dogs must heel including Figure 8, come on recall, stand for examination, long sit for one minute and long down for three minutes.  The leash may lay on the floor in front of the dog or be held by the handler.

971.  Novice -- Dogs must heel on leash, including Figure 8, heel free, stand for examination off leash, long sit for one minute off leash and long down for three minutes off leash.

972. Graduate Novice -- Dogs must heel on leash, heel free, including Figure 8, drop on recall, stand for examination off leash; long sit for three minutes and long down for five minutes both with handler out of sight.

973.  Open -- All exercises off leash.  Heel free and Figure 8; drop on recall; retrieve on flat; retrieve over high jump; broad jump; long sit for three minutes and long down for five minutes, both with handler out of sight.

974.  Utility -- The dog will perform five exercises, the signal exercise “40 points,” the scent discrimination exercise with leather “30,” and metal “30" objects, the direct retrieve “30,” directed jump “40" and the group stand for examination “30.” A perfect exercise is worth “200 points.”  Exhibitors must supply their own scent articles and gloves for the directed retrieve.

975. Trick Class -- The handlers show what tricks they have taught their dogs such as shaking hands, playing dead, limping, etc.

976. Trail Class -- This will be an obstacle course using most obedience commands to navigate different objects. Have fun!

977.  Agility Class - All 4-H & FFA exhibitors must attend agility class with their dog before they can show.
