General Instructions:  Poultry Showmanship

ELIGIBILITY-Any 4-H'er enrolled in the poultry project may enter the competition.

  1. ELIGIBLE POULTRY-The participant may use any bird they choose, so long as it was raised and trained by the 4-H'er. Showmanship class must be entered with advance entry.
  2. BASIS FOR JUDGING-Showmanship is based on grooming and training of the bird and the appearance and behavior of the exhibitor. The exhibitor must vocally explain the steps in their routine and the merit of the bird. Primarily showmanship is the skill of the exhibitor in presenting and explaining the bird before the judge. The excellence of the bird is not considered in scoring.
  3. TIME LIMIT-There will be a five minute time limit to complete the showmanship presentation.  Exhibitors will be timed.  Time will begin as soon as the 4-Her begins speaking and will stop when the exhibitor poses the bird or when they indicate to the judge they are finished with their presentation.  Point deductions may be assessed if the length of showmanship presentations exceeds five minutes
  4. JUDGES-The judges may or may not ask questions of the exhibitor at the close of the routine.

Information on the basis of judging poultry showmanship is found in Nebraska Cooperative Extension 4-H 191.
