General Instructions:  Swine

  1. GENERAL RULES-All general livestock rules (listed at the beginning of this department) apply.
  2. SWINE IDENTIFICATION-Official county 4-H ownership affidavits will be considered the official list of eligible hogs.  Entries that do not match hogs on the affidavit will be disqualified without exception.  All market swine must have been tagged with 4-H tags and identified by June 1 to be eligible to show at county fair.  Market animals that do not weigh at an official weigh in day must provide a photo of the animal with ID tag in ear in addition to county ID form.
  3. DRESS CODE-Will be as required in General Livestock Rules.
  4. GROOMING-See Livestock General Rules. 
  5. ENTRIES-Entries are due as indicated by your County Extension Office. 
  6. DISQUALIFICATION-Exhibitors shall not add materials, natural or synthetic, which extend body shapes beyond normal limits.  These animals will be disqualified from competition. Additionally, animals showing signs of illegal drenching, injections, etc. will be disqualified from competition.
  7. DRIVING INSTRUMENTS-Driving instruments are to be used for the purpose of directing barrows/gilts while they are in transit throughout the barn and while being exhibited in the show ring.  Exhibitors are to treat animals in a humane manner at all times and show management will provide a warning to any exhibitor deemed to be in violation of this basic principle of animal husbandry.  Any exhibitor who fails to heed the warning will be disqualified and removed from the fairgrounds. 
  8. YOUTH FOR THE QUALITY CARE OF ANIMALS (YQCA): Nebraska 4-H requires all youth enrolled in livestock projects to complete annual quality assurance training through Youth for the Quality Care of Animals (YQCA).  This may be done through the YQCA online course, through a UNL Extension Staff taught course or by completing the Intermediate or Senior test out test (online only).  Quality Assurance training/testing must be complete by July 1.
