Healthy eating is important throughout the year, but the holidays create unique challenges.

The holidays can be notorious for rich foods and overeating. But with a commitment to stick to nutrition goals, New Year’s resolutions can focus on something other than weight loss.

Here are a few sensible tips for maintaining healthy practices through the holiday season.

Plan meals using MyPlate guidelines from USDA. Fill half the plate with colorful vegetables and fruits, one-fourth with protein, and one-fourth with grain. Choose whole grain whenever possible. Add low fat dairy options.

Enrollment is not required for some 4-H programs and events. However, club members are required to officially enroll through the 4-H Online system once a year in order to participate in club activities and fair events. Youth ages 8-18 who are not members of a formal 4-H club may enroll as independent members. Youth between the ages of 5 and 7 may also enroll as Clover Kids.

Holidays are usually filled with family and food. Each family has different traditions that create many memories over the years. One of my favorite holiday traditions is enjoys my sisters’ homemade dinner roles that originate from Grandma’s recipe.  They have become a side dish tradition I absolutely love. Whatever traditions you enjoy, make sure you are serving food safely.

Heat keeps rains away during wheat harvest

July 23, 2024
Amid the high temperatures in western Nebraska, wheat harvest has been going on. “We’re right in the middle of wheat harvest,” said Cody Creech, Nebraska Extension dryland cropping specialist at the UNL High Plains Ag Lab in Sidney. “The rest of the state has wrapped up, and we’ll be completing harvest this week.” Typical for most growers, weather has been a big factor in wheat yields. The yield reports in the Panhandle vary depending on whether the fields were hit by hail or not.
