Private Pesticide Applicator Training

This is the time of year when many farmers will need to renew their private pesticide applicator certification for another three years. It is important to note that this is a general training that will certify those attending so they may purchase or apply restricted use pesticides. Something that was new last year is that anyone wanting to apply one of the dicamba-based herbicides to soybeans also needs to attend an annual dicamba training that is NOT included in this general training.

Taking Care of Poinsettias

By Kathleen Cue, Nebraska Extension Horticulture Educator

I had a client call me one September day and asked if it was time to bring her poinsettia into the light. Oh yes and by the way, she mentioned the plant had been stored in the closet for the past nine months. Hmmm… On the positive side of things, I thought it was great she was aware that the absence of light instigated the poinsettia’s coloration. Still, after 9 months with no water and sunlight, it was safe to say the plant was toast and it was best to throw it out.

Market Facilitation Program (MFP) Update

Usually when I write a column, I hope it has the latest pertinent information. This is one time I hope for just the opposite. I don’t know what the situation will be when you read this, but at the time I wrote it last week, the government shutdown was in place with no resolution in sight. It doesn’t matter who you think is at fault for causing this, what does matter is it could potentially affect many farmers’ ability to sign up for the MFP.
