As Nebraska Extension Educator Jim Schild prepares to retire from a 35-year Extension career – 30 of them spent in Scotts Bluff County – he says what he’ll remember most is the connections he’s made with people over the years.

“I appreciate all the opportunities I’ve been able to take advantage of in my career,” Schild said. “Meeting a lot of great people, developing lifelong friendships, helping people, making their lives more productive, helping them save a tree or shrub, seeing 4-Hers growing up to be leaders in their communities.”

Schild is retiring at the end of January.

When commodity prices go down, it’s important to keep financial books on the ranch for more than just tax time.

Nebraska Extension Educators will teach how to use Quicken, a popular commercial record-keeping package that is user friendly, inexpensive and easy to find, in two upcoming workshops in Kimball and Scottsbluff. Quicken is flexible for ag and non-ag business enterprises and separates out family living expenses.

These workshops are limited to 10 participants per site. The cost is $20 per participant. Dates and locations:

Kimball, Feb. 1 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at the Kimball Courthouse Annex. To register call the Kimball County Extension Office, 308-235-3122.

Nebraska Extension will offer 2018 Landlord-Tenant Lease Workshops in Kimball, Alliance, Scottsbluff, and Bridgeport, to help landlords and tenants develop leases that are right for both parties while maintaining positive farm leasing relations.

Scotts Bluff County Extension office will hold an open house Jan. 29, 2018 from 3-6 p.m. to show its new office space at 4502 Avenue I, Scottsbluff.

The open house will take place from 3-6 p.m. Parking is available on the south side of the building, and entrance is through the glass doors closest to the parking lot. Refreshments will be served.

The County Extension Office is now located in the southwest corner of the UNL Panhandle Research and Extension Center. Before the move, it was on the east side of the building, nearest the large parking lot.

Nebraska Extension will conduct chemigation certification training sessions beginning in February through early April at Scottsbluff, Sidney, Bridgeport, Alliance and Valentine, as well as other sites around Nebraska, such as Ogallala, North Platte and Ainsworth.

Producers who plan to apply crop nutrients and pesticides through irrigation systems during 2018, including those whose 2017 permits expired Dec. 31, are required to attend a training session and pass the test administered afterward. Attendees are asked to pre-register at the extension office whose session they plan to attend. They will receive a training manual and calibration workbook to review before the training session.

Spring is still a couple months away, but it’s not too early to talk about gardening, landscapes, turf, trees, shrubs, and other horticulture topics.

The 2018 Nebraska Extension Master Gardener training will begin in late January, with weekly training classes running into mid-March for volunteers who want to add to their own knowledge and share what they know with others in their communities.
