If any type of unexpected emergency strikes your community, you may not have access to fresh food, water or electricity for days, maybe weeks. This page will provide you with useful information so you can be prepared when an emergency strikes, and know how to keep your food safe during and after an emergency.

Bad Idea to Store Perishable Food Outdoors

During the winter months when outdoor temperatures are low, the idea of storing some foods outdoors may be a common practice, or at least a logical option. Extension urges you to understand the potential health risks of improperly chilling food which is to be eaten later. There are true risks when food is stored in unconventional methods.

It’s important to keep financial books on the ranch for more than just tax time. A Quicken for Farm & Ranch Record Keeping workshop will be held Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. to Noon in North Platte at the Lincoln, Logan, McPherson Extension Office.

 To register call the Lincoln, Logan, McPherson Extension Office  Extension Office at 308-532-2683. This workshop is limited to 10 participants. The cost to attend the workshop is $20/participant.

 Nebraska Extension Educator Jessica Groskopf will teach how to use Quicken, a popular commercial record-keeping package that is user friendly, inexpensive and easy to find. Quicken is flexible for ag and non-ag business enterprises and separates out family living expenses.

Healthy eating is important throughout the year, but the holidays create unique challenges.

The holidays can be notorious for rich foods and overeating. But with a commitment to stick to nutrition goals, New Year’s resolutions can focus on something other than weight loss.

Here are a few sensible tips for maintaining healthy practices through the holiday season.

Plan meals using MyPlate guidelines from USDA. Fill half the plate with colorful vegetables and fruits, one-fourth with protein, and one-fourth with grain. Choose whole grain whenever possible. Add low fat dairy options.

Nebraska Extension’s program receives NIFA Grant to support STEM Education for at-risk youth

Lincoln, Neb. — The University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension has been awarded a five-year grant from the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through the Children, Youth, and Families At-Risk (CYFAR) Program. 

CYFAR is a national initiative developed to meet locally identified needs, through quality research-based programs for vulnerable, at-risk, low-income, and low-resource children, youth, and families to promote positive life outcomes.

USDA grants boost Husker research on sugar beet nitrogen management, agroforestry

August 21, 2024
The University of Nebraska–Lincoln has received two federal grants totaling $1.7 million to build on the university’s environmental sustainability work on two issues: nitrogen management for sugar beet production, and alley cropping, an agroforestry practice involving the planting of trees or shrubs alongside crops. The funds are part of $90 million in Conservation Innovation Grants awarded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service.
