- [0:00] Hello, this is Debra Walnofer, 4-H Assistant for Holt
- [0:03] and Boyd Counties with your Extension 4-H Update.
- [0:07] Nebraska Extension and Central States Center for Agricultural Safety and Health
- [0:13] at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, College of Public Health,
- [0:17] have announced plans for the annual “tractor safety” training courses scheduled
- [0:23] at 6 sites across Nebraska in late May through early June.
- [0:28] Students will complete the first day of the course either by attending a
- [0:32] hands-on event or online through the eXtension Foundation Campus website.
- [0:38] The hands-on events will take place May 22 in North Platte and May 30th in Grand Island.
- [0:47] After successfully completing a hands-on event or the online course, and testing,
- [0:53] the required driving test will be offered at five locations across Nebraska.
- [0:59] Federal law prohibits children under 16 years of age from using certain equipment
- [1:05] on a farm unless their parents or legal guardians own the farm.
- [1:10] However, certification received through the course grants
- [1:14] an exemption to the law allowing 14- and 15-year-olds
- [1:19] to drive a tractor and to do field work with certain equipment.
- [1:25] Teens 14 or 15 years of age who work on farms,
- [1:29] or others who are interested in learning about safe farming practices,
- [1:34] are encouraged to register for the certification course.
- [1:38] Students under the age of 14 are not eligible for certification
- [1:43] but the hands-on events are open to everyone in the community.
- [1:48] The online course will cover the required elements of the
- [1:52] National Safe Tractor and Machinery Operation Program,
- [1:57] including quizzes which students must pass to attend the driving portion of training.
- [2:03] Once a student is registered, they will be sent instructions,
- [2:07] materials, course paperwork and a link to the online course.
- [2:13] The onsite driving training and exam will include
- [2:17] a driving test and equipment operation and ATV safety lessons.
- [2:23] Students must demonstrate competence in hitching and unhitching equipment and
- [2:28] driving a tractor and trailer through a standardized course.
- [2:33] Instructors will also offer education about safe behaviors and laws for ATVs,
- [2:39] utility-task vehicles, and other off-road vehicles.
- [2:44] The cost of the course is $35
- [2:47] which includes educational materials, the online learning link and supplies.
- [2:53] Payment can be made at the time of the driving exam.
- [2:58] Only checks or cash will be accepted.
- [3:02] Local driving date and location is June 2 at AKRS Equipment, west of O’Neill on Hwy 20
