- [1:07] The long-term goal is to arrive at a consensus
- [1:10] on the most effective methods of developing leaders and
- [1:13] leadership capacity within communities.
- [1:16] The term “Chautauqua” refers to a meeting in 1874 at Lake Chautauqua, New York,
- [1:22] that brought together Sunday-school teachers to discuss biblical studies.
- [1:27] The word, however, has evolved to include
- [1:29] any meeting that brings together diverse voices and
- [1:32] perspectives to arrive at a consensus on a topic.
- [1:35] The Chautauqua approach for leadership development
- [1:37] will concentrate on creating community-based systems
- [1:40] that support community members in increasing their
- [1:43] efficacy and capacity for leading change.
- [1:46] “That’s the idea behind this project - bringing together diverse voices
- [1:49] to revolutionize how we do community leadership development,” said
- [1:53] Dr. Lindsay Hastings, ALEC professor and event co-organizer.
- [1:57] The Chautauqua will include guided conversations
- [2:00] that address the concerns of local leaders.
- [2:02] Topics will include common assets of
- [2:04] leadership, communities’ successes and challenges,
- [2:08] what leadership research looks like in practice,
- [2:10] how to think differently about community leadership systems,
- [2:14] curriculum delivery methods between individuals and cohorts,
- [2:17] mentoring structures and the most effective locations for leadership training.
- [2:21] Interactive discussions will cover inclusive methods of delivering
- [2:25] these programs to those typically excluded, such as
- [2:28] those who work late shifts or have limited transportation.
- [2:31] Key findings of the Chautauqua will be shared through publications and
- [2:35] presentations to leadership organizations in Nebraska’s
- [2:39] communities and across the nation.
- [2:41] A policy brief is also planned, which will offer recommendations
- [2:44] for communities and leaders as they work to bridge the gap
- [2:47] between leadership development education and implementation.
- [2:51] The leadership Chautauqua is from noon to 7pm, Wednesday, Nov. 8
- [2:55] at the Younes Conference Center-North, in Kearney, Nebraska.
