Dakota & Thurston County 4-Her’s got the chance to participate at the 4-H Public Speaking and Favorite Food Contests, held on April 15, 2023 at the United Church of Pender. Our judges for the morning were Mary Loftis and Karna Dam, and we want to give them a big thanks for making this experience possible for our local 4-H youth! Since we had two judges this year, we decided to have one do the Music Contest and the other do the Public Speaking/PSA, and then we had both of them judge the Favorite Foods Revue together!
Five 4-H members were awarded ribbons as a part of the Public Speaking/PSA Contest. 4-H exhibitors prepared a Speech or a Public Service Announcement to present in front of an audience. From the county contest, up to 5 speakers from the Intermediate (10-13) and Senior (14+) divisions, from both Dakota & Thurston Counties, are selected by the judge to participate in the Premier Communications Contest in Lincoln on June 17-18, 2024.

With the conclusion of the Public Speaking/PSAcontest, judging moved onto the Favorite Foods contest. 4-Her’s are to select and prepare your favorite recipe; check. Plan a menu using that favorite recipe; check. Plan your table setting, add a center piece; check. Review the proper way to list a menu, and print on a 4x6 card; check. Print your favorite recipe on a 4x6 card; check. All of these steps were taken by the 4-H’ers that participated in 4-H Favorite Foods Contest.
