Public Participation & Engagement

Engagement, when done well, brings a diverse group of people together to share their stories and express their opinions. The dialogue helps build trust, which in turn enables a better understanding of differing views and perspectives, ultimately leading to more informed public decisions. When people are involved in deliberation and their voices are heard, it creates buy-in and builds a positive relationship, often with community institutions, organizations, or various levels of government. It is the difference between “doing something to a community vs. doing something with a community”. Engagement, as a process, is often viewed as a community-building strategy with positive outcomes.
It takes skill and effort to plan and implement an effective engagement strategy. This badge is designed to help participants expand their knowledge base and build confidence in planning and conducting community engagement for improved outcomes.
