Shooting Sports - Archery & Trap

ARCHERY

4-H'ers must be enrolled in the Shooting Sports Archery project to exhibit in these classes and a member of the Platte County 4-H Archery Club. The Platte County Fair archery shoot will follow the Nebraska 4-H Archery Rules (NFAA Tournament and Scoring Rules). Please see the website under Platte County 4-H Resources for a list of these rules. 

Dress: 4-H members involved in the archery shooting sports competitions must wear a 4-H t-shirt (club or Platte County official 4-H shirt) or white shirt with a 4-H chevron; jeans or jean shorts, and close-toed shoes (shorts may be worn for indoor events only).

Competition Rules:

  1. Each archer will shoot a total of 60 arrows (5 arrows at a time) at a 48” target face at the following distances: 

Junior Division: 8-11 years old as of January 1st of current year (Cubs): 60 arrows at 10 yards
Intermediate Division: 12-14 years old as of January 1st of current year (Youth): 60 arrows at 20 yards

Senior Division: 15 -18 years old as of January 1st of current year (Young Adult): 60 arrows at 20 yards

  1. All males and females will compete against each other in all equipment categories and age levels. 
  2. A participant must receive a purple ribbon to be eligible for receiving Grand Champion or Reserve Champion in their equipment category. 
  3. Scoring will be on an NFAA single or five spot (archer’s choice) 40cm. target. Scoring shall be X, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, from center out. Lines must be touched to count the next higher score. If an arrow is not shot, the score for the missing arrow will be zero (i.e. it will not be made up).
  4. Ties will be broken with a single arrow shot to see who is closest to the “X” in the bullseye.
  5. Equipment category groups:

Basic Bow: Compound or Recurve/Long Bow must be shot with fingers, no sights allowed. 
Freestyle Limited: Any compound bow, must be shot with fingers, sights, stabilizers, and peep sights allowed.

Freestyle: same as freestyle limited except shot with a mechanical release

Olympic Recurve: long bow or recurve, must be shot with fingers, with sights (no magnification allowed), stabilizers allowed.

  3. Armbands are optional.
  4. No sights, string peeps, string markings, tied string floss, or limb markings allowed in basic bow.
  5. Maximum bow draw weight – 60 lbs.

TRAP

All youth participating in the Platte County Fair 4-H Trap Shoot must be enrolled in 4-H Online under the Platte County 4-H Trap Team club and must have attended five team practices. All youth participating in the county fair shoot must abide by all team expectations regarding safety and behavior. All firearms are to be kept in designated gun racks, unloaded with all actions open awaiting use. Firearms must be pointed upwards or NOT directly pointed at the group at all times, with the breech or action open while participating. Firearms are not allowed to rest on the shooter’s footwear while not shooting. At no time what-so-ever will the muzzle of any firearm pass near any other person or shooter. Firearms may be loaded only when it is your turn to shoot and/or trap help or coaches have confirmed that it is your turn to shoot. Ear and eye protection is mandatory and must be worn by all shooters on the live range. Use of headphones playing music as ear protection is prohibited. Shooters may not pass forward of their designated yardage for any reason without permission.  All youth participating in the county fair shoot must wear 4-H Trap Team apparel.
