After postponement in 2020, the Nebraska Water Center’s annual conference will return August 2021 at the Panhandle Research & Extension Center.

Entitled “The Shape of Water in Western Nebraska,” the conference will be held Monday, August 16th at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Panhandle Research and Extension Center in Scottsbluff. An all-star lineup of Nebraska water professionals will discuss water infrastructure in the panhandle, western Nebraska’s unique hydrogeology, and innovation in water and agricultural management.

Irrigation is in full swing for the North Platte Valley in the Panhandle of Nebraska.

Water deliveries by the four major irrigation districts (Pathfinder, Gering-Fort Laramie, Goshen and Farmers) are expected to be near normal. The districts hope to deliver water to growers through the first week in September.

Nebraska Extension will host land management workshops in Sidney and Bridgeport in July. The meetings are free to attend, but registration is required.

The workshop in Bridgeport will be July 22, 2021 from 2 to 4:30 p.m.  at the Prairie Winds Community Center, 428 N. Main St. To register call Nebraska Extension in Morrill County at 308-262-1022.

The workshop in Sidney will be July 23, 2021 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at Western Nebraska Community College (Room 115), 428 N. Main St. To register call Nebraska Extension in Cheyenne County at 308-254-4455.

Nebraska Extension will host a farm and ranch transition workshop in Scottsbluff, from 8:30 a.m. to noon on July 22, 2021 at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, 4502 Ave. I.  

The meeting will offer information on planning and communication strategies, as well as financial and legal considerations for agricultural landowners, ranchers and farmers who are thinking about how to proceed with plans to retire, exit or transfer the farm or ranch business.  

 Presenters will include Allan Vyhnalek, a Nebraska Extension educator for farm and ranch succession and transition, and Pamela Olson, an attorney based in Scottsbluff. 

A pair of former faculty members at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center will present a seminar June 14, 2021 at the Panhandle Research & Extension Center.

Drew Lyon, former dryland cropping systems specialist at the Panhandle Center, is now the Endowed Chair of Small Grains Extension and Research and Weed Science at Washington State University.

David Baltensperger, former alternative crops breeding specialist in the Panhandle, is now the Professor and Head of the Department of Soil and Crop Sciences in the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Lyon and Baltensperger will speak beginning at 3 p.m. in the Bluestem Room at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center. The public is invited and there is no charge.

Nebraska Extension will offer ServSafe® Manager Training Program for food service managers and employees Aug. 4-5, 2021 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. in Scottsbluff, at the Panhandle Research and Extension Center, 4502 Avenue I.

Registrations are due by July 2, along with the registration fee. Space may be limited.
