Dr. Charlie has spent the majority of his professional career within Extension. He earned his stripes in Extension by serving for 17 years as the Extension Veterinarian and 8 years as the Assistant Director of Agriculture and Natural Resources at North Dakota State University (NDSU). In 2022, he came to Nebraska Extension to become its dean and director. Beyond his vast experience in agriculture, being raised and working on a farm, Dr. Charlie has experience in public health— most notably serving as an Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) stationed in Lincoln, Nebraska, early in his career. He has a deep understanding of rural life and culture; his home town had about 78 people living in it. He also understands urban issues having lived in the metro area of Detroit, Michigan, as a racetrack veterinarian. Dr. Charlie is committed to one vision for Nebraska Extension: Why do we exist? “We exist to help people co-create a better tomorrow!” How do we do that? “We help people develop critical thinking skills, leadership skills, and connections across Nebraska.” What do we offer? “We provide research and evidence-based information for people to make informed decisions.” People who make informed decisions take control of their lives. When people take control of their lives, they begin to have hope. People who have hope create a better tomorrow for themselves, their families, and their communities! Extension is in the people business.
