DEPARTMENT F - DIVISION 500 - WILDLIFE JUDGING CONTEST
Division 500                    Classes 950-952                    Pay Category C

 

  1. ELIGIBILITY – All currently enrolled 4-H members are eligible to participate in the Wildlife Contest regardless of projects carried.
  2. AWARDS – All participants will receive ribbons. Additionally, the participants with the top three scores in each division will receive special recognition.
  3. CONTEST INFORMATION – The Wildlife Contest consists of identifying animals using tracks, pictures, pelts, and skulls. Areas might include: Birds, Fish, Insects & Arachnids, Mammals, Reptiles & Amphibians.

DEPARTMENT F -DIVISIONS 503-508 - SHOOTING SPORTS CONTESTS

SHOOTING SPORTS RULES

  1. ENROLLMENT - Participants must be actively enrolled in each 4-H Shooting Sports projects and be under the direct supervision of a certified 4-H Shooting Sports instructor to participate in the county contest.
  2. Participants MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN FIREARM/BOW, AMMUNITION, ARROWS, SAFETY GLASSES, EARPLUGS, OR ARRANGE TO USE CLUB EQUIPEMENT and other required equipment. Firearms/Bows used for competition are to be transported in a case, carrying bag or box. Penalty will be disqualification.
  3. PRE-ENTRY - Youth must enroll in projects and attend practices to be eligible for competition.

4-H ATTIRE – Follow the 4-H Dress Code (pg. 5) with these exceptions: In addition to the gray county 4-H t-shirt, participants may wear a state or county-approved 4-H Shooting Sports t-shirt, and hats, caps, and headgear are allowed. For archery only: youth can wear jean shorts. (Shorts must be denim blue jeans material Bermuda style, at most 3 inches above the knee, with no holes and hemmed, no cut offs. (See State rules for State contests). Any participant while on the shooting line is required to wear shoes that completely cover their feet for practices and competitions. Example of footwear that is NOT acceptable include, but are not limited to: sandals, flip-flops, crocks, clogs, and bare feet. PENALTY FOR NOT WEARING APPROPRIATE FOOTWEAR: disqualification from shooting.

  1. SHOOTING SPORTS PARTICIPATION CODE OF CONDUCT - Parents/guardians and youth must sign the online Shooting Sports Participation Code of Conduct by June 15 in order to participate in a 4-H Shooting Sports Contest.
  2. HUNTER SAFETY CARD – Nebraska Game & Parks Hunter Certification Training is required. A copy of the 4-Her’s Hunter Safety Card must be on file in the Extension Office by June 15th or before practices start if the 4-H member is participating in any Shotgun, and Smallbore competition.
  3. PARENTS ATTENDANCE - See each discipline for contest details. Parents or an appropriate supervisor are required to attend contests and practices with youth in the Junior division and assist during their participation as directed by the superintendents.
  4. Participants exhibiting unsafe practices may be disqualified from the contest at the discretion of the superintendent. Range rules are strictly enforced!
  5. PRACTICE REQUIREMENTS: Nemaha County 4-H offers Archery, Pistol, Rifle & Shotgun disciplines. A minimum of 6 practices will be offered in each discipline. To be eligible to participate in each contest, 4-H’er must attend 3 practices per discipline. A participant becomes eligible for all pistol competitions by meeting the minimum practice requirements of at least one pistol competition. A participant becomes eligible for all rifle competitions by meeting the minimum practice requirements of at least one rifle competition. (Exception: Only 2 BB gun practices will be offered and only one rifle practice is required to compete. BB gun practices will transfer but do not meet the minimum requirement for the other rifle competitions. For 3D Archery a minimum of 4 practices will be offered, to be eligible to participate in the contest, 4-H’ers must attend 2 practices. 3D Archery practices will transfer but do not meet the minimum requirement for the FITA archery competition.) NOTE: First year participating in a contest, youth must attend at least one practice before the competition to learn the logistics even if they have already met the practice requirements for the discipline. Example: A first year participant that met the rifle requirement in Air rifle is still required to attend one BB gun practice to participate in the competition.
  6. SHOOTING SPORTS EXHIBITS can be made and exhibited as static exhibits. See Environmental Education & Earth Science, Shooting Sports, Department D, Division 347.

 

DEPARTMENT F - DIVISION 503 - BB GUN CONTEST

Participants must provide their own rifle, or arrange to use club equipment, BB ammunition and safety glasses. Participants are required to wear eye protection. Parents/guardians are required to assist youth in the Junior division with loading and cocking rifles on the firing line. Rifles should be loaded with only one BB at a time and reloaded after each shot. Pump and lever rifles only, no CO rifles allowed. Firearms used for the BB Gun Contest will use BB ammunition and will be limited to 2 pumps. No tripods or rests allowed. Participants will take 10 shots from 5 meters in each position Prone, Kneeling, Standing and Sitting.

Explanation of Sights

  • Open Iron – Rear sight is adjustable with a notch of variable shapes, typically a “v” notch.
  • Peep – Rear sight is adjustable, is a round disc with a small hole (peep) in the center.

DEPARTMENT F - DIVISION 504 - ARCHERY CONTEST

Participants must provide their own bow, arrows and release aids or arrange to use club equipment.
Club arrows are only for club bows.
Target used: 122 cm (centimeters) FITA (World Archery)

 

Explanation of Bows/Archery Classes

Compound Bows

  • Freestyle Limited - Arrows must be drawn and released by hand. No limit on sights or stabilizers. Release aids limited to gloves, tabs and fingers.
  • Freestyle - Same as freestyle limited; also allows use of mechanical release

Traditional Bows

  • Recurve - arrows drawn by hand, no sights or marks on bow or string. Recurve bows curve away from the archer at the tips of the bow. No mechanical devices, stabilizers or counter balances are allowed. Only glove, tabs or fingers.
  • Longbow - arrows drawn by hand, no sights or marks on bow or string. No mechanical devices, stabilizers or counter balances are allowed. Only glove, tabs or fingers. Any person shooting Longbow will shoot distance one class lower than their age division. (Ex: Senior will shoot at Intermediate distance, Intermediate will shoot at Junior distance and Junior will shoot at Junior distance.)

DEPARTMENT F - DIVISION 507 - AIR SHOOTING CONTESTS

Participants are required to wear eye protection.


Pistol Rules

  • NRA International Style Pistol Rules (most recent printing). Pistols can be either precision or sporter.
  • Juniors (8-10 years) – Seated. Rests the grip (and hands) on supporting material. Must have a coach.
  • Intermediate (11-13 years) – Can be one hand supported (support must be counterbalance type support) or unsupported. Coaching encouraged.
  • Seniors (14-18 years) – Seniors must stand free, without support, completely within the firing point. The complete pistol must be held and fired with one hand only. Bracelets, wristbands, or similar items that might provide support are prohibited on the hand and arm which holds the pistol.
