POULTRY SHOW RULES

B. NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR - A 4-H member may enter 8 birds in each class with the exception of broilers (3) and production birds (3). Exhibitors are not to exceed a maximum of 8 birds in each division. All poultry exhibited must be grown in a 4-Hers/FFA poultry project.
C. IDENTIFICATION - 4-H members may identify a maximum of 20 birds by listing the breed, sex, and class number on an Identification Affidavit and submitting it to the Extension Office by closing, June 15. Leg bands are not required.
D. PRE-ENTRY - Poultry entries, including showmanship, to be eligible to exhibit at the County Fair, must be pre-entered on a GREEN Entry Sheet (available at the Extension Office or online) OR entered online at https://nemaha.fairwire.com. Entries are due by June 15th. List whether the bird is a cockerel, cock, pullet, or hen.
E. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS – Health certificate not required. No additional testing required for Nebraska-origin poultry. All poultry (including pigeons) for exhibition shall be free of parasites and show no signs of disease during the exhibition. May be testing is required by the State Department of Agriculture. Any bird covered with mites during visual inspection at check-in will be sent home and not allowed to show. If the judge finds mites during judging, the animal will also be sent home.
F. SHOWMANSHIP – All 4-Her’s must exhibit a bird in showmanship and need to enter the showmanship class on the pre-entry form. Participants may use any bird they choose (Chicken, waterfowl, turkey) so long as it was raised and trained by the 4-H member. Judging showmanship is based on the grooming and training of the bird and the appearance and behavior of the exhibitor. Exhibitors must vocally explain the steps in their routines and the merit of the bird. Showmanship is the skill of the exhibitor in presenting and explaining the bird before the judge. The excellence of the bird is not considered in scoring. There will be a five-minute time limit to complete the showmanship presentation. The judge may ask questions of the exhibitor at the close of the routine. Refer to Livestock Showmanship General Rules for more information.
G. CARE OF POULTRY AT THE FAIR - All poultry require food and water at all times.
H. MINIMUM WEIGHTS - The minimum weights for exhibition birds will be as stated in The American Standard of Perfection and the Bantam Standard. The minimum weights for production birds will be 3 lbs for females and 4 lbs for males of light breeds and 4 lbs for females and 5 lbs for males of heavy breeds.
J. BROILERS & PRODUCTION/LAYERS

  1. BROILER PROJECT RULES
  • FEED AND PERFORMANCE RECORDS must be entered at the time of broiler check-in.
  • BROILER TRIO – A pen of broilers shall consist of three male or three female birds 6-9 weeks of age. They will be judged for meat production qualities only and need not necessarily conform to breed standards.
  1. PRODUCTION/LAYERS RULES:
  • PERFORMANCE RECORDS must be entered at the time of production bird check-in.
  • PRODUCTION TRIO - A pen of egg production birds can be hybrids, crossbred, or purebred and shall consist of 3 sexually
    mature females. Egg production females will be judged for production qualities only and need not necessarily conform to breed standards. Hen must be in egg production.

K. EGG EXHIBITS are limited to three dozen per exhibitor. Class options will consist of 1 dozen white, brown, or colored eggs. Eggs will be judged according to uniformity of size, weight, and color as well as cleanliness. Do not refrigerate prior to exhibiting eggs. 4-Hers may exhibit ONE dozen of each color.
L. RULES FOR BANTAM & OTHER POULTRY - The rules for standard-size chickens apply equally to bantams and waterfowl where applicable.
M. PRESENCE DURING JUDGING - Each 4-H exhibitor MUST be present at the exhibit area during judging. If the participant or a substitute showman approved by the superintendent is not present, the exhibit will not be judged.
