GENERAL GOAT SHOW RULES:
A. See General Rules and General Livestock Rules and Regulations.
B. NUMBER OF ENTRIES PER EXHIBITOR- An exhibitor is limited to exhibiting 4 dairy goats, 4 meat goats, 4 breeding meat goats, and 4 pygmy goats.
C. There will be a champion goat selected within each division.
D. IDENTIFICATION
- Dairy Goats and Pygmy Goats - Identification of dairy goats and pygmy goats must be documented on an Identification/ Ownership Affidavit, accompanied by a drawing or photograph of the animal, and submitted to the Extension Office by June 15.
- Meat Goats (Market & Breeding) - All market & breeding meat goats must be ear tagged with the official USDA scrapie ID. All identification must be documented on an Identification/Ownership Affidavit and submitted to the Extension Office by June 15.
- State Fair / AKSARBEN eligible Meat and Breeding Goats must be tagged with the official USDA scrapie ID, owned by the exhibitor, and have the DNA collector envelope with hair sample submitted to the County Extension Office by June 15. Animal nomination and payment must be submitted online via the Show Stock Manager livestock database by June 15th. Contact the Extension office for instructions. Youth will have until August 10 to declare if they will show 4-H or FFA at the State Fair. Youth who choose to exhibit their animal in the FFA show at State Fair will be ineligible to show that animal at the AKSARBEN show.
E. PRE-ENTRY - All goat entries, including showmanship, to be eligible to show at the county fair, must be pre-entered on a GREEN Entry Sheet (available at the Extension Office or online) OR entered online at https://nemaha.fairwire.com. Entries are due by June 15th.
F. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS - See GENERAL ANIMAL REQUIREMENTS.
G. Exhibitors are encouraged to enter the Best Dressed Goat contest and to use their imagination to design a costume for their goat. The attire should emphasize the personality of the animal.
H. DAIRY GOAT RULES
- See General Rules and General Livestock Rules and Regulations.
- Grand Champion and Reserve Champion Dairy Goats will be selected from classes 910 - 960.
- Registered and commercial animals will be shown together.
- The superintendent may elect to combine classes with 5 or less entries.
I. PYGMY GOAT RULES
- See General Rules and General Livestock Rules and Regulations.
- Pygmy goats will show following the Dairy Goat Show. A pygmy goat is not recognized as a meat goat or a dairy goat. They are more of a companion type of animal.
- All ages of pygmies will be shown together.
J. MEAT GOAT RULES
- See General Rules on pg. 5 and General Livestock Rules and Regulations.
- AGE – Meat Goats: all meat goats are required to be born on or after January 1 of the current year, have milk teeth, and there shall be no evidence of breaking of the skin or eruption of the two permanent front teeth. Breeding Meat Goats: all doe kids must have all milk or temporary teeth present; yearling does can have yearling teeth, but cannot have two-year old teeth up. Does exhibiting two-year old teeth will be allowed to show, but will not be eligible to compete for champion, and will show in the Other Goat Class. Classes may be divided at the discretion of show management.
- HAIR - Goats must be shorn sufficiently short from the knee and hock up for State Fair; at County Fair, this is not required.
- HORNS - Goats must have horns blunted. Dehorning is acceptable and preferred.
- NECK CHAINS & HALTERS- Goats are to be shown with a halter, smooth neck chains or smooth or pronged collars only.
- DEFINITION OF MEAT GOATS - May be doe or wether kids. Short scrotum, cryptorchid, and buck kids are not eligible in Market Meat Goat classes. Does and wethers will show together. Males must be intact for Breeding Meat Goat classes.
- SHOWMANSHIP – The use of showing and/or handling practices that may be considered objectionable or abusive, such as striking or slapping goats and exhibiting the goat with its feet off the ground are not acceptable. The use of such practices may result in the lowering of a ribbon placement. Goats may be braced but must have all four feet on the ground.
- The superintendent may elect to combine classes with 5 or less entries.
- WEIGHT LIMITS – Meat Goats must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs. at check-in. No reweighs will be allowed- Meat Goats weighing less than 50 lbs. will show in the Feeder Goat class and will not be eligible for purple ribbons or Champion Meat Goat. (State Fair Weight Requirements are the same.)
- BORN & RAISED CLASS - A class for market animals where the animals must have been born, raised, and fed within the operation of a youth’s immediate family (family, grandparent, sibling, uncle, or aunt) in Nemaha County or in the county where the youth lives. Champion & Reserve Champ Born & Raised will be awarded and be able to come back for Grand Market Champion. The animals must be ID’d by the deadline day for the Born & Raised class. Goats not making the required market weight will not be eligible for purple ribbons and will be shown in the feeder goat class, no matter what classes they were registered for.
- BEST DRESSED GOAT – A Best Dressed Goat Competition will follow the meat goat show. Youth can choose which goat to dress up (Pygmy, meat, or dairy). A Champion Best Dressed Goat will be selected.
