The Orchard in South Sioux City

1500 East 17th St - South Sioux City, NE

This educational orchard is an example of growing and harvesting locally grown fruit.

A USDA grant was received by the city of South Sioux City.  They enlisted Nebraska Extension in Dakota County and Nebraska Forest Service to help with the project.

The orchard was planted in the spring of 2014.  Each year, different varieties and other fruits have been added.  In 2016 honey bees were added to the fruit orchard.  Also in 2016 a Nut Orchard was added at Freedom Park.  In 2018 a classroom, storage building made with Cross Laminated Timber was added.  Solar panels are being installed.  In 2019 the east end of the orchard will be landscaped with antique apple trees,km rain gardens, a pergola and pavillion.  It will also include many pollinator friendly plants.

Area residents are encouraged to help with the orchard to learn about growing and harvesting fruit.
