Bucket Calf Show
8/1/26
The next generation of livestock producers and animal caretakers took center stage at the 2026 Dakota-Thurston County Fair during the annual 4-H Bucket Calf Show. Young exhibitors showcased months of hard work, responsibility, and hands-on learning through one of 4-H's most popular introductory livestock projects.
Designed for first- and second-year 4-H members, typically ages 8 to 14, the Bucket Calf project teaches youth essential skills in animal care, including bottle feeding, grooming, halter training, and daily calf management. During the show, participants are evaluated on both their calf presentations and their knowledge of nutrition, health, management practices, and recordkeeping.
More than a competition, the Bucket Calf project provides a foundation in animal science, responsibility, and leadership. For many exhibitors, it serves as the first step toward larger livestock projects and continued involvement in agriculture, helping develop the future leaders of Nebraska's cattle industry.

4-H Rabbit Show
4-H News Release
Rabbit Show
7/28/26
Another hot start to the Dakota~Thurston County Fair didn’t stop the 4-H’ers from participating in the 4-H Rabbit Show. The rabbits were brushed and groomed, and had their nails trimmed. It looked like some of the rabbits even worked to make their ears stand up straighter and their tails extra fluffy! (Well, except for the lop eared bunnies, their ears never stand up.) Judge Dale Knode put the kids and their animals through the paces testing their handling and knowledge on the rabbits breed, statistics, nutrition needs and more. The judge looked at the rabbits to determine how well they met breed standards and if they are properly cared for. In showmanship the 4-H’er does a demonstration in front of the judge; working from the head to the tail, the 4-H’er shares their knowledge of their rabbit.

4-H Sheep Show Showcases Youth Dedication and Livestock Skills
Hard work, dedication, and months of preparation were on full display during the 4-H Sheep Show at the Dakota–Thurston County Fair. Youth exhibitors from across both counties proudly showcased their market lambs and breeding sheep while demonstrating the skills they have developed throughout the year.
Participants competed in Market Lamb, Breeding Ewe, and Showmanship classes, where judges evaluated both animal quality and the exhibitors’ ability to present and handle their sheep in the ring. The show highlighted the knowledge and commitment required to successfully raise and care for livestock.
For many 4-H members, sheep projects provide much more than competition opportunities. Through their work, youth develop valuable life skills including responsibility, goal-setting, communication, and sportsmanship. The confidence and growth displayed by exhibitors made the sheep show another successful and memorable event at the Dakota–Thurston County Fair.

Static Exhibits
The 4-H Static Exhibits Showcase was a highlight of the Dakota–Thurston County Fair, featuring the creativity, skills, and accomplishments of local 4-H youth. More than 700 exhibits were entered by members across a wide range of project areas, including photography, woodworking, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, science, technology, and the arts. These non-animal projects represent months of learning, effort, and personal growth. Through their exhibits, 4-H members explored their interests, developed practical life skills, and shared their achievements with fairgoers and judges.
Entries were evaluated on workmanship, creativity, accuracy, and presentation, with outstanding exhibits earning special recognition and the opportunity to advance to the Nebraska State Fair. The showcase demonstrated the impact of the 4-H program and the dedication of Dakota and Thurston County youth as they continue to learn, grow, and excel through hands-on experiences.
