General Rules – Beef Show

A.    Number of Entries Per Individual – One entry per class per exhibitor.

B.     Identification and Pre-Entry

        1.    Market Beef - All market beef must be weighed–in (if participating in the rate–of-gain contest) and have ear tag ID.  If not a family ID then one must be obtained from the Extension Office.  All identification of market beef must be documented on a Beef Pre-Entry/ID form and submitted to the Extension Office. (This form may be completed on the Market Beef weigh-in day for county showing). All market beef eligible to be exhibited at State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben must be tagged with an official 840 USDA EID tag, owned by the exhibitor and have DNA envelope and hair sample submitted by June 15.  All market beef exhibitors must complete online market beef nomination entry submitted by June 15.  For more information see State Fair book on-line.

        2.     Breeding Beef - All identification of breeding beef must be documented on a Beef Pre-Entry/ID form and submitted to the Extension Office in the county in which you intend to show by closing on June 15. Heifers must be identified as either market or breeding beef, they cannot be identified under both categories. No individual heifer may show in both market and breeding classes. Family ID/eartag may be used for county records.  Breeding heifers will need a tattoo and be registered by the member on-line to show at State Fair or Ak-Sar-Ben by August 10.

        3.     Feeder Calf/Bucket Calf – All feeder calves and bucket calves must be tagged using appropriate 4-H tags. All identification of feeder calves and bucket calves must be documented on a Pre-Entry/ ID form and submitted to the Extension Office in the county in which you intend to show by June 15. All feeder calves going to Ak-Sar-Ben must have DNA envelopes and ear tags supervised by Extension staff.

I.      Feeder Calf Rules

        1.    General Rules – See above General Rules – Beef Show.
        2.    Any beef calf born between January 1 and June 1 of the current year.   
        3.    Unweaned calves may be brought to the fairgrounds and taken home on the day of the show if not accompanied by the dam.
        4.    A class winner steer and heifer calf will be selected, then a champion and reserve champion feeder calf will be selected.
        5.    Showing Classes – Calves must be on a halter and broke to show. Classes with more than six calves may be split into another class. No more than eight will show in one class or decision of the Superintendent.                                                  

J.     Breeding Beef Rules

        1.    General Rules – See above General Rules – Beef Show.
        2.    Champion and Reserve Champion – Class Winners will be selected from the 2 & 3 year old class and the 4+ year old class. A champion and reserve champion from the breeding heifer and cow-calf will be selected. A supreme champion will be selected from these division champions. 
        3.    Showing Classes – Classes with more than six beef may be split into another class. No more than eight will show in one class. 
        4.    Show Order: Breeding beef will be shown from youngest to oldest.

        4-Her’s who take cow/calf projects to fair will be required to participate in an interview segment of the project where a designated judge will ask participants a series of questions.

K.    Market Beef Rules

        1.    General Rules – See above General Rules – Beef Show.
        2.    Steers and heifers born after January 1 of preceding year are eligible to show in this class.
        3.    Showing Classes – Purchased and Bred and Fed.  A calf purchased from a Cedar County beef producer or a calf produced by the 4-H member would be allowed in the Bred & Fed class as long as the animal was born and raised in Cedar County.  Embryo transfer and artificial insemination is included in the Bred & Fed as long as the animal was born and raised in Cedar County.

L.     Rate of Gain Rules

        1.    Animals officially weighed in at the designated weigh-in day are eligible.
        2.    Top rate of gain steer and heifer will receive an award.
        3.    The average daily gain will be determined using the county fair weight minus weigh in weight divided by the number of days between those two dates.

*New* The Cow/Calf Pair class is designed for halter/show broke cows and their halter/show broke progeny. The Cow/Calf Pair class is not a pen show. Exhibitors entered in the Cow/Calf Pair are responsible for finding a substitute showman to show either the cow or the calf entered in the Cow/Calf Pair class. See General Livestock Rules and Regulations for more information on Substitute Showman. Calves shown in the Cow/Calf Pair class are eligible to show as a Feeder Calf.

Feeder Calves
