4-H SHOOTING SPORTS

  4-H Shooting Sports requires youth to be under the direct leadership of a certified 4-H Shooting Sports Leader in either Shotgun, Rifle, BB Gun, .22, Archery, and /or Hunting Skills. To participate in the competitions, a 4-H member MUST be enrolled in the Boone County 4-H Shooting Sports Club during the current year and MUST attend a minimum of three practices in each discipline with a certified instructor to compete in that division at the county contest.

  BB Gun and Archery - Open to all youth age 8 and older before January 1 of the current calendar year.

  Air Rifle - 4-H member must be in their second year, or age 9 and older before January 1 of the current calendar year.

  .22 Rifle and Shotgun - 4-H member must be age 10 and older before January 1 of the current calendar year. Youth 10 and 11 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.

 Members are encouraged to use their own firearms. Club guns will be available to use if needed.

 All youth must enroll or re-enroll using 4-H Online each year before attending a practice. Please sign up now, and you will receive notifications of upcoming meetings and contests.

BOONE COUNTY 

4-H SHOOTING SPORTS GUIDELINES 

  1. 4-H AGE: Boone County 4-H Shooting Sports is open to all youth who are age 8 & older before January 1, 2025. 
  2. DUES:  No club dues will be accessed in 2025. Shotgun and .22 Rifle must furnish their own shells. 
  3. SAFETY FIRST: No unsafe conduct or “horseplay” will be allowed. Any member can be sent home and expelled from shooting sports. Eye protection is required for all disciplines. Ear protection is required for shotgun & .22 rifle. 
  4. MEETINGS: To be scheduled 
  5. 4-H NEWSLETTER: You will receive a copy of 4-H Bulletin Board in the mail every one or two months from the Albion Extension Office with the return address: from NE Extension in Boone County, 2624 Fairgrounds Road, Albion. This newsletter may contain information concerning shooting sports. It is IMPORTANT that both parents and member read it. 
  6. FACEBOOK: Reminders of meetings and postponements due to bad weather will be posted. 
  7. LESSONS: The members may be split into groups at meetings to keep the interest of all members. Many topics will be taught, demonstrated, and hands on experience to all members. Safety is always first. Shooting Sports consists not only of hunting but also target practice and how to properly handle both firearms and archery equipment. 
  8. PROJECTS: 
    1. BB Gun, Archery – open to all youth age, 8 & older before January 1, 2025. 
    2. Air Rifle – 4-Her must be in their second year or be age 9 & older before January 1, 2025. 
    3. Shotgun & .22 Rifle – 4-Her must be age 10 & older before January 1, 2025. An adult must accompany youth between 10 and 11 years of age. 

IMPORTANT: 

  • MEMBERS WILL BE OBSERVED BY THE INSTRUCTORS AND IF THE INSTRUCTORS FEEL THE MEMBER IS NOT CAPABLE OF PROPERLY AND SAFELY HANDLING THE FIREARM, THEY WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO SHOOT THE FIREARM. 
  1. COUNTY FAIR: Each member must attend three practices in each discipline with a certified instructor to compete in that division at the fair. There will Not be any “Make-Up” meetings, weather related, or for any other reason. 
  2. PARENTS: Are encouraged and invited to attend all meetings. An adult must be present with youth, 10 & 11 years old, enrolled in shotgun or .22 rifle projects. An adult must be present with youth 12 & older who do not have a Hunter Education Card. 
  3. FIREARMS/ARCHERY EQUIPMENT: There may be times when the members are asked to bring their own firearms or archery equipment to meetings or competitions. They must be clean and in good working condition. All firearms must be unloaded and cased when transporting. 
  4. COMPETITIONS: There are competitions in other counties during the year in most of the disciplines. We don’t always know very far in advance so always read the 4-H newsletter and let a leader know that you are interested. Parents are encouraged to drive and coach their own children, but rides are sometimes available. 
  5. RECORD BOOK:  Every member is encouraged to keep their record book up-to-date during the year. 
  6. ENROLLMENT: Your 4-H enrollment must be completed using 4H Online before you attend a meeting. Enrollment is required for all shooting sports project areas including BB Gun, Air Rifle, Archery, Shotgun, and Smallbore Rifle projects. 
  7. HUNTER EDUCATION: (HE) All 12-year-old members will be required to have their HE card or must have an adult present.
