The 4‑H Fashion Show is an opportunity for 4‑H members to showcase their clothing construction and consumer management skills. Construction garment members are judged on fit, construction, poise, and overall look of the garment on the individual. Shopping In Style members are judged on garment fit, the overall look of the outfit, and poise, as well as record keeping skills in the written report. 

General Rules

  1. Each entry must have 4 x 6 double spaced, typed (12-point font) narration card beginning with the project, class number and 4-H members full name and age group on the top line. This card is due at the Extension Office on July 1.  If your project is not complete enough at fair entry time to write your narrative, please submit a card with your name, age group project & class number on the card which will allow the superintendents to schedule your place in the fashion show.  When your card is complete you can exchange it.  A template is available as a link in the fair book. 
  2. Garments should be age appropriate. 
  3. Garments should not contain inappropriate language or images
  4. Number of projects 4-H members may model: 
  • Beyond the Needle, one garment 
  • STEAM Clothing 1-Sewing Fundamentals, 2 garments.
  • STEAM Clothing 2-Simply Sewing, 2 garments.
  • STEAM Clothing 3-A Stitch Further, 3 garments. 
  • Fiber Arts-Knitting and Crocheting, 1 garment.
  • Shopping in Style Purchased Outfit and Written Report SF184, 1 outfit.

 

NOTE: When entering classes where you can model more than one garment, use the same class code for each project.  Example: STEAM Clothing 1, if you are modeling 2 garments, put the code down twice. Example: STEAM Clothing 3, if you are modeling 3 garments, put the code down 3 times.

  1. Each contestant can choose or make accessories to complete the outfit modeled. 
  2. All garments modeled must be entered for construction judging.  Upon completion of modeling, remove the garment, place on hanger, and enter with other constructed garments for judging. 
  3. 4-Hers are required to model in the Public Fashion Show.  Modeling garments may be checked out of the 4-H Exhibit Building between 6:00 p.m. and 6:45 p.m., with the participants ready to model by 7:00 p.m.  Garments must be returned to the 4-H building immediately after modeling.  If a 4-Her cannot participate in the public modeling, the Superintendents, & 4-H staff should be notified prior to the Fashion Show. Public Fashion Show models can model up to 4 outfits that evening. 
  4. All garments must remain on display during the county fair.
  5. The following projects qualify for State Fair modeling: Beyond the Needle, STEAM Clothing 2 Simply Sewing, STEAM Clothing 3-A Stitch Further, Knitted or Crocheted Clothing, Shopping in Style Purchased Outfit and Written Report SF-184. Upcycled Outfit Combination - must contain a complete constructed outfit (examples: if the top is upcycled, must include a constructed bottom, upcycled dress).
  6. 4-H members must be ages 8-18, before January 1 of the current year, to be selected. 
  7.  If the exhibitor qualifies for the State Fair Fashion Show, the garment cannot be entered as Clothing Construction Exhibit.

Beyond the Needle Modeling

One project may be modeled

  • Embellished Garment with an Original Design- - (SF117) - Garment is created using intermediate or advanced techniques as defined in the project manual. Designs are the original idea of the 4-H member using the elements and principles of design to make an original statement. 
  • Garment Constructed from Original Designed Fabric - (SF117) - Fabric yardage is designed first, then a garment is constructed from that fabric. Other embellishments may be added.
  • Textile Arts Garment - (SF117) - Garment is constructed using new unconventional materials. Examples: rubber bands, plastic, duct tape.
  • Wearable Technology Garment – (SF117) - Garment has integrated technology into its design.
  • Embellished Garment (scoresheet SF117, not eligible for State Fair) - any surface embellishment that is applied to a purchased or constructed garment such as ribbon, lace, embroidery, applique, braid, buttons, or fabric pieces.  May use patterns or ideas from magazines. Commercial Iron-on appliques or any prepackaged item where the materials are predetermined by the manufacturer will not be accepted.

STEAM Clothing 1, SEWING FUNDAMENTALS Modeling (county only)

 Two projects may be modeled: (if modeling 2 projects, put the number down twice on your fair entry form) 

  • Pincushion and Needlebook
  • Pillowcase
  • Simple Pillow • Bag/Purse  (no zippers or button holes) 
  • Simple Top • Simple Bottom (pants, shorts or skirt) • Simple Dress 
  • Upcycled Simple Garment

STEAM Clothing 2, SIMPLY SEWING Modeling 

Two projects may be modeled (if modeling 2 projects, put the number down twice on your fair entry form) 2 

  • 4-H members who have enrolled in or who have completed STEAM Clothing 3-A Stitch Further projects are not eligible.
  • A purchased top can be worn to complete a vest or jacket outfit with a skirt, pants or shorts. 
  • 4-Hers wanting to model night shirts or loungewear must have the garment approved b by Fashion Revue Superintendents or the 4-H Assistant. 

 

(SF117) - Possible types of STEAM Clothing 2 garments include:

  • Dress; Or 
  • Romper or Jumpsuit; Or
  • Two-Piece Outfit Combination (skirt with top, vest, or lined/unlined jacket; jumper and top; pants or shorts outfit (pants or shorts with top, vest, lined/unlined jacket). Or a purchased top can be worn to complete a vest or lined/unlined jacket outfit with a constructed bottom. OR 

  • Upcycled Outfit Combination - must contain a complete constructed outfit (examples: if the top is upcycled, must include a constructed bottom, upcycled dress).

 STEAM Clothing 3 – A STITCH FURTHER Modeling 

Three projects may be modeled (if modeling 3 projects, put the number down 3 times on your fair entry form) 

  • A purchased top can be worn to complete a vest or jacket outfit with a skirt, pants, or shorts
  • Those wanting to model night shirts or loungewear must have the garment approved by Fashion Revue Superintendents or the 4-H Assistant.  Those modeling nightwear or loungewear will not be considered for state fair modeling. (SF117) – 

C410040 – Senior Division (ages 12-18, before January 1, of the current year).

Possible types of STEAM Clothing 3 garments include:

  • Dress or formal; OR 
  • Skirted Outfit Combination (skirt with top, vest, lined/unlined jacket OR jumper and shirt) A purchased top can be worn to complete a vest or jacket outfit with a skirt, pants, or shorts.; OR
  • Pants or Shorts Outfit Combination (pants or shorts with top, vest, lined/unlined jacket) A purchased top can be worn to complete a vest or jacket outfit with a skirt, pants, or shorts.; OR
  • Romper or Jumpsuit; OR
  • Specialty Wear (swim wear, costumes, western wear-chaps, chinks, riding attire or hunting gear); OR • Non-tailored Lined or Unlined Jacket or Coat, additional pieces with jacket or coat may either be constructed or purchased.; OR
  • Tailored Coat, Blazer, Suit Jacket, or Outerwear. Additional pieces with coat, blazer, jacket, or outerwear may either be constructed or purchased. OR
  • Upcycled Outfit Combination - must contain a complete constructed outfit (examples: if the top is upcycled, must include a constructed bottom, upcycled dress).

FIBER ARTS - Knitted or Crocheted Clothing Modeling 

4-H exhibitors 8 years and older, before January 1 of the current year, are eligible for the State Fair (can model 1 project).   Coordination of garment(s) worn with knitted garment will also be evaluated.

Shopping in Style Purchased Outfit, Binder or Video and Written Report SF184 Modeling

  • Participants must exhibit a Shopping in Style Consumer Management project “Best Buy for Your Buck” to be eligible to model. 
    • The Best Buy for Your Buck binder or video must also be turned in to be eligible to model.   A portion of your score is based on Form SF184.  It must be turned in with your narration card when fair registrations are due. 
  • Participants must model a complete outfit. 

  •  • All pieces of the garment must be purchased (accessories can be something you have a home). 

     

C410060 Modeled Shopping In Style Purchased Outfit and Written Report (SF185) - The curriculum is developed and designed for youth ages 8 and older to help them strengthen their consumer skills when purchasing clothing. 4‑H members must model a COMPLETE WEARABLE OUTFIT (ex. Top/bottom, dress). All pieces of the garment must be purchased. Purchase of accessories is optional.
