HERDSMANSHIP
Livestock exhibitors are expected to keep their quarters orderly, neat and as attractive as possible. The entire area, including tie out stalls for beef, will be inspected three times daily and each club will be rated on its herdsmanship. Each livestock division will be rated separately. A club must have at least three exhibitors to be eligible for premiums. Herdsmanship duties are the responsibility of the exhibitors rather than leaders and parents.
Basis of Rating — 20 points (100 percent)
1. Animals clean at all times with grooming apparent — 3 points (15 percent)
2. Animals adequately cared for with proper feeding, clean and proper amount of bedding and adequate feeding equipment.
Beef animals securely tied with 18 to 20 inches of lead.
Stalls and pens must be cleaned before 9 a.m. Animals in stalls or pens between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. except for weighing, showing, washing or feeding. Cattle may be tied out after 8 p.m. each evening. — 5 points (25 percent)
3. Trappings and feed area clean and neatly arranged. Grooming and tie out areas kept clean. Fork handles and similar equipment kept down. — 2 points (10 percent)
4. Proper courtesy and conduct shown by exhibitors at all times and at all places. This includes all areas of the fairgrounds as well as the show barn. Exhibitors are expected to do the herdsmanship. — 5 points (25 percent)
5. Exhibitor’s share of alley area kept clean. Loose dirt and dust kept under control by sprinkling. Wheelbarrows kept outside. Alleys swept and clean by 9 a.m. — 5 points (25 percent)
Non-essential equipment or material is permissible if complying with general show rules but is not encouraged nor will it be considered in the herdsmanship rating.
Herdsmanship begins at the time the class of livestock must be in place and ends when the livestock leaves the premises. The barns may be checked any time between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Results will be posted each evening.
