BEEF DIVISION

*Denotes State Fair Entry

Purple, $7.50; Blue, $4; Red, $3; White, $2

Each exhibitor is eligible to show a total of eight beef animals.

All livestock must be pre-entered by July 2 at the County Extension Office. 4-H members showing cattle at the fair must bring brand inspection certificates on entry day, regardless of whether they plan to sell the animal or not. If the 4-H’er’s animal bears a brand belonging to the member’s parents, he will need to have them sign a Disclaimer of Interest. All brand releases will be satisfied by 6 p.m. on entry day of the fair or cattle will not be allowed to show. 4-H members showing cattle at the fair must have signed a drug-free waiver for their animals on entry day. 4-H’ers may obtain drug-free waivers at the Extension Office before the fair.

Youth for the Quality Care of Animals Training: Exhibitors in beef, dairy cattle, goats, sheep, swine, and market poultry (including production turkeys) must have received Quality Assurance training or testing through a UNL Extension program by the date set by the Extension Office. Anyone not completing the Q.A. training will be ineligible to exhibit at the Buffalo County Fair. Completion of training will be certified by a Buffalo County Extension Educator.

GROOMING RULE — See General Livestock Rules.

MARKET BEEF

All Market Beef is required to be born on or after September 1, 2024. Market Beef must be owned by the member and ear tagged and identified with an animal affidavit submitted to the Buffalo County Extension office on or before June 15 to be eligible to exhibit.  Animals jointly owned by siblings – ownership will be determined at check-in at fair.  To be eligible for either a first or second purple ribbon in live show and rate of gain, market animals must meet the following requirements.

Weight requirements: 900-1600 pounds

To be eligible to show in market classes, steers must weigh 950 pounds or more and heifers must weigh 900 pounds or more on entry day. Any steer or heifer weighing less than these weights may show in a pre-market class and is not eligible to show for champion steer or heifer.

The market divisions will be divided according to check-in weight.

Grand Champion Market Beef will be selected from champions of weight divisions, from market steer, bred and fed steer division, British breed steer division, and market heifer division.  Superintendents will determine the number of divisions following check in.

*G010010     Market Beef

G010020     Bred and Fed Steer Division - Designed to honor the outstanding quality of animals produced by Buffalo County 4-H exhibitors on their family’s farm or ranch. Steers that are produced from the 4-H member’s own herd or the herd of the immediate family’s farm or ranch are eligible. The steer’s dam must have been bred and calved at the family’s facilities and the steer must have stayed in the ownership of the family since its birth. The steer(s) may or may not be branded. Bred and fed classes will be divided by weight at the discretion of the supervising committee. An exhibitor is allowed two market beef. If an animal qualifies for Bred and Fed it may show in either that division or the traditional steer division. Exhibitors will nominate their Bred and Fed steers at weigh-in and can make the designation at the time of pre-entry.

*G010030     Market heifer

To be eligible to show in the British breed steer division at the Buffalo County Fair, steers must be owned by the exhibitor, be registered by the official breed association and exhibit breed characteristics typical of a purebred animal of the breed in which they are entered, and have a tattoo. Appendixed Shorthorn/Shorthorn Plus steers will not be accepted as purebred shorthorns. The American Hereford Association currently offers a Steer Certificate for purebred steers from registered parents or steers with a registered sire and a commercial purebred Hereford dam.

The registration paper or certificate must indicate one of the following: 1. the name of the exhibitor, 2. the name of the exhibitor and/or a co-owner who is an immediate member of the exhibitor’s family, or 3. the family or ranch name or parent’s name. REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED by fair entry day. Copies of the registration or certificate must be submitted with pre-fair entries. FEEDLOT STEERS

G010021       Feedlot Steers — Steers within this class must have hair less than 1 inch in length.

Average Daily Gain Contest

Weights collected during county weigh-in will be used to calculate average daily gain.  The amount of weight gained will be divided by the number of days between the weigh-in date and weigh-in at county fair.  Each exhibitor will have their highest placing beef entered into the average daily gain contest.  Additionally, to be eligible to compete in the rate of gain contest, market beef animals must weigh between 900-1600 pounds.  Results will be announced after the 4-H Beef Show, and premiums will be awarded to each exhibitor, with an additional monetary award given to the top 10 finishers.  The top 10 awards are sponsored.

Bucket calf should be no more than six months of age and weigh no more than 350 pounds at the time of the show. No identification sheet, ear tags, or record books required. Pre-fair registration will be required for this show so that enough staff/volunteers can be available for show arena safety. Exhibitor is eligible to show not more than one bucket calf. Participation ribbons given only; no premiums given. The Clover Kid Bucket Calf Show will take place just prior to the regular 4-H Bucket Calf Show during the Buffalo County Fair. 3. Age, size, and temperament of animal projects must be appropriate for the exhibitor’s age and size.

4. There will be one adult/teen volunteer present for every two Clover Kids that are handling or exhibiting animals.

BREEDING HEIFERS

All breeding heifers will have their tattoos and IDs checked on entry day of fair along with market beef unless the entry/entries are spring heifer calves born after January 1 of the current year. Spring-born heifers may be checked in with the feeder calves on their entry day and timetable. Any heifer not having a legible tattoo or showing evidence of a fresh or recent tattoo will be disqualified from the show. A fresh or recent tattoo is one that shows physical evidence of needle penetration of the skin that has not had time to properly heal (i.e., significant redness, scabbing, or bleeding). A fresh or recent tattoo may also be indicated by presence of ink within the ear that wipes onto a clean cloth upon tattoo inspection. To be eligible to show in a registered class, the heifer must have a corresponding tattoo and registration papers by June15. If heifers need to be re-tattooed after June 15, contact the Extension Office for specific instructions. A calfhood vaccination tattoo is not considered an official identification tattoo. Original registration certificates or papers for Angus, Balancer, Composite Charolais, Charolais, Chianina, Gelbvieh, Hereford and Polled Hereford, LimFlex, Limousin, Maine Anjou, Mainetainer, Piedmontese, Red Angus, Shorthorn, Shorthorn Plus, Foundation Simmental, Simmental and heifers of other breeds that will show in the All Other Breeds (AOB) class must be presented at the check-in chute when the heifers are led through for checking tattoos, IDs and entry papers. Only breeding heifers recognized as registered and eligible to show by their respective state Breed Associations will be allowed to compete in the breed classes. Buffalo County reserves the right to determine eligibility of all registered breeding heifers entered in the show.

Note: Exhibitors can speed up the check-in process by cleaning out the ear and being sure there is a readable tattoo before they come to the check-in chute. Exhibitor cooperation is greatly appreciated.

SUBSTITUTIONS — Exhibitors may substitute different animals at show check-in time as long as the substitute animals are properly enrolled and identified on the appropriate State 4-H Identification and Enrollment Form.

COMMERCIAL HEIFERS — To be eligible for show, a commercial breeding heifer must have a known birth date, be identified by an official Buffalo County ear tag, EID and/or legible tattoo, and be recorded on an ownership affidavit in the Buffalo County Extension Office by June 15 of the current year. No bangs tattoo or cow/calf tag will be accepted for identification. Commercial breeding heifers will be classed by weight not age.

BREED CLASSES — To be eligible to show in a registered class, the heifer must be owned by the exhibitor, have an official breed registration, and be identified with a legible ear tattoo or identification type that is accepted by the association and corresponds with the registration papers by June 15 of the current year, as well as be recognized by the official breed association to show in registered classes. Heifers entered in the AOB class must have appropriate registration papers. The registration certificate must indicate the current owner of the animal to be one of the following: 1. the name of the exhibitor; 2. the name of the exhibitor and/or a co-owner who is an immediate member of the exhibitor’s family.  Family farm or ranch names will not be accepted. Animals jointly owned by siblings – ownership will be determined at check-in at fair. REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED BY COUNTY FAIR DATE. Immediate family is defined as members of a household, including parents, brothers and sisters, and youth in care of the head of the household. Copies of the registration certificate must be submitted with Pre-Fair entries. Original registration certificates or electronic documents presented using a tablet or smart phone will be accepted if pulled up or downloaded from their respective breed website at check-in. Animals whose registration papers are not approved for a specific breed division will show in the Commercial class at the discretion of the Beef Superintendent.

Note: Any breeds with fewer than three head at check-in at the fair will be shown in one class. They will enter the ring by age and be placed in ribbon group according to individual merit. Show management reserves the right to combine classes of a breed until they reach a minimum class size of three or more. Large classes may be divided to accommodate ring size.

Divisions with three or fewer entries may be combined into an All Other Breeds class at the discretion of the superintendent. The All Other Breeds division may also include registered heifers for which a separate division is not listed, but which meet their state breed association’s criteria for exhibition, or registered heifers not meeting their state association’s criteria for exhibition. Animals whose registration papers are not approved will show in the Commercial class and not in the AOB class since they do not meet registration requirements.

Cow/Calf Pair

The pair will be exhibited on Saturday during the Breeding Beef Show, within their respective breed or in the commercial class.  The calf could also be exhibited individually as a Feeder Calf.  The pair will be stalled throughout the fair, in the stall space for the club with all other beef entries.  Both the cow and the calf need to be identified by June 15th, with an official 4-H tag that can be obtained from the Extension Office.

Supreme Heifer

A supreme champion breeding heifer will be selected at the conclusion of the breeding heifer show. The champion from each of the breed divisions will be eligible.
