Archery Contest

Premiums: $6.00 for all placings

All entries must be pre-entered on the General Pre-Entry Form at the extension office. To participate in these competitions, a 4-H’er MUST have been enrolled in the Polk County 4-H during the current year and MUST have attended at least THREE meetings/practices in each discipline enrolled during the current year. Youth must wear current year 4-H shirt to shoot. More info and exact times can be found on the schedule. Safety is of highest priority. Any archer not exhibiting proper shooting safety will not shoot. The decision of tournament officials, safety officers, and line judges is final.

Rules

4-H Shooting Sports requires youth to be under the direct leadership of a certified 4-H Shooting Sports Leader in either shotgun, rifle (bb gun) archer, pistol, back powder/muzzleloader, and/or hunting skills. No firearms can be entered as an exhibit, nor live ammunition; however, information can be shared through pictures. Classes 004-009 can be entered by anyone in the conservation and wildlife area. Remember to look at General Rules for this area.

Competition Rules

  1. Junior archers will shoot from a distance of 5 to 15 yards. Intermediate and Senior archers will shoot from 10 to 25 yards. Shooting station yardage will be marked.
  2. Female and male archers will shoot together in the same shooting age bracket classes. 
  3. Equipment Code Groups:  Group #1 – Traditional: Long bows and Recurve bows; no sights or markings of any kind on bow, no releases or stabilizers. Shoot with fingers, tabs, or gloves. Group #2 – Olympic Style:  Long bows and Recurve bows; may use sights, releases and stabilizers, no string sights or peeps. Shoot with gingers, tabs, or gloves. Group #3 – Barebow:  Compound bows; no sights or markings of any kind on bow, no releases. Stabilizers are allowed. Shoot with fingers, tabs, or gloves. Group #4 – Unlimited:  14 Compound bows with accessories, may use sights, releases, or stabilizers.
  4. Equipment requirements and restrictions:  There will be an equipment inspection and check-in prior to competition
    1. No stabilizers allowed in Traditional
    2. No sights, string peeps, string markings, tied string floss, or limb markings allowed in Traditional or Barebow
    3. Maximum bow draw weight – 60#
    4. Refer to State 4-H Archery Rules and Regulations for rule clarification

            Optional equipment that may be used include:

  1. Armguards
  2. 2 back up arrows, all being the same shaft material, tips (no hunting tips), length, and fletching material. Plastic or feather fletching, all the same size, can be used with different color mixes.

Age Groups:

Junior:  8 – 11 years

Intermediate:  12 – 14 years

Senior:  15 – 18 years
