One of the highlights of the year for 4-H members is being able to exhibit their completed projects in the Burt County Fair, and then hopefully to have their exhibits selected for State Fair Competition!
- When is the fair? The Burt Fair begins the third Friday in July. As part of the fair, members have an opportunity to compete in a variety of small animal shows, a variety of contests, as well as enter completed projects for the static exhibits.
- Who can enter the fair? Any enrolled 4-H member can participate in the fair. The Nebraska Extension in Burt County Office will make available the fairbook, which lists all the 4-H classes that can be entered. For the most part, the classes do not change a lot from year to year, so you can look at previous fair books to get ideas for projects to enter in the fair.
- How do we enter exhibits in the fair?
- Static Exhibits: The process for entering a static exhibit in the fair is simple. You will need to pre-enter your projects by June 30th. You will need to fill out the pre-entry form (paper or online) according to the fairbook. The office will then prepare the entry cards for each of your projects, and these can then be picked up from the Burt County Extension Office or they will be available at check-in at the fair. These cards need to be properly attached to your exhibits. Be sure to include necessary supporting information as well. It is your responsibility to bring your exhibits to the fairgrounds on entry day at the posted time.
- Livestock Exhibits: 4-H project animals need to be tagged/identified by June 15th. It is your responsibility to properly ID your animals by the deadline. Your livestock exhibits must also be pre-entered (paper or online) by June 30th according to the fairbook classes.
- How are exhibits judged?
- Static Exhibits: All static exhibits are judged and earn a purple, blue, red, or white ribbon. In addition, many project areas will select an overall winner, and they will receive an award. Clover Kid entries are not judged but are given comments; each entry receives a participation ribbon. Youth receive premiums based upon the color of ribbon earned. At the conclusion of the fair,4-H members will receive a premium check in the mail from the Burt County Ag Society.
- Livestock Exhibits: All livestock exhibits are judged and earn a purple, blue, red, or white ribbon. Trophies are awarded during the shows, and premium checks will be mailed after the fair from the Burt County Ag Society.
- When are exhibits released? Entries are not released until the fair closes. Early release is not allowed. “Exhibits taken before release time will not receive premium money.”
