It has been said, “Develop your communication skills because when you open your mouth, you tell the world who you are.”  This is just another way of saying that we’re known by what we produce (words, actions, etc.).  Our reputation, in other words.  Said another way: “Develop your husbandry skills, because when you handle and care for animals, you tell the world who you are.”  Stockmen have long considered their work an art form, and take pride in honing their skills with a level of devotion seldom rivaled in other professions.  In a time where the agricultural workforce is experiencing the effects of a generational shift and growing integration of technology, it has never been more important to focus on refining practical animal handling skills.  Demonstrating a lifelong devotion to continuous improvement in care and management practices is a welcome response to the public’s growing concern about agricultural practices.

To support Nebraskans in their pursuit of excellence as animal stewards, Nebraska Extension announces the Nebraska Stockman’s Tour.  The tour will include approximately six stops across Nebraska in 2023 where experts will provide cattle handling demonstrations, address spectator questions and scenarios, and provide immersive learning opportunities.  Each tour stop will offer core content focused on low-stress handling techniques, behavioral principles, safety, facility design, BQA guidelines, and more.   Supplemental topics will vary by location, including feedlot concerns, pasture-based management, chute operation, temporary facility setup, and more.  Each tour stop will offer a unique program, and as a result attendance at all stops is suggested.  Participants who attend all events will be eligible for a year end Stockman Award.  Look for more details on dates, locations and prizes in future BeefWatch articles.  Stockmanship is a big part of our everyday lives, and when others have the opportunity to see how we handle and care for our livestock, our actions can tell our story better than words.  Stay tuned for more updates on the Nebraska Stockman’s Tour – 2023 promises to be an exciting time in the livestock care area.
