Nutrition School Enrichment Kits (SEK) K-5th Grade
Nutrition School Enrichment Kits provide a unique and evidence-based approach to teaching health to Nebraska's youth!
Nebraska Extension's Nutrition School Enrichment Kits can help your students develop skills and knowledge to meet the 10 School Components of the Whole School, Whole Community, and Whole Child (WCC) Model for youth in K-5th grade.
- What is included? School Enrichment Kits include teacher guides, 5 grade specific lesson plans, and all lesson plan materials.
- How does it work? Nebraska Extension's Nutrition Education Staff will deliver materials and teach an introductory lesson. The kits will remain in your classroom for 3 weeks. Staff will return to teach a concluding lesson and pick up the kits.
- Participation: Due to special grant funding kits are available upon request and FREE to schools located in Douglas and Sarpy Counties with 50% or more reduced or free lunch participation. If you are unsure, we can verify your school's eligibility.
Curriculum:
- Kindergarten (SEK): Food Fun
Lessons covered: Food adventures, Fun food groups, Mealtime matters, Healthy habits, Fantastic five senses. - 1st Grade (SEK): Healthy Me
Lessons covered: Why my body needs food, How my body uses food, The five food groups, What is a balanced meal?, Healthy snacking. - 2nd Grade (SEK): Plate Party
Lessons covered: A healthy lifestyle, MyPlate, Plan for health, Food variety, Make choices. - 3rd Grade (SEK): Let's Eat Smart
Lessons covered: Body building blocks, Healthy food choices, A balanced diet, You are what you eat, Safe food. - 4th Grade (SEK): Rat That Plate
Lessons covered: Food groups, Food for health, Making food choices, Nutrition and personal health, Food safety habits. - 5th Grade (SEK): Food Science Investigator

Cooking with Kids, the MyPlate Way
Grades: 2nd-6th
*This class is only available for qualifying schools, due to grant funding. Schools where 50% of more of students receive free or reduced prices meals.
Fee: No Cost
Length of Program: 45-minute class
Location: virtually through Zoom or in your classroom
Class Objectives:
Students will learn how to:
- Make a healthy meal, the MyPlate way
- Balance fun foods with everyday foods
- How to read a recipe and some basic cooking skills
Cooking Skills 101 for Young Children
Grades: 1st-3rd

Students will learn how to:
- Basic cooking skills; measure ingredients, cracking an egg, mixing, etc.
- Handwashing, food and kitchen safety
- How use basic cooking equipment and tools
- How to prepare a recipe
Cooking Skills 101 for Tweens & Teens
Grades: 4th-8th
