Seeking 4-Hers to Sew Face Masks, Surgical Caps and Isolation Gowns

Working cooperatively with Three Rivers Public Health Department and United Way, Dodge County 4-H has accepted the challenge to assist in obtaining much needed Face MasksIsolation Gowns and Surgical Caps. These supplies will be distributed to individuals in Dodge, Saunders and Washington County who need them. Saunders and Washington County 4-Hers are also contributing to this effort.

New patterns have been posted. PLEASE consider being a part of this extremely important community service project.

As 4-H members, you have the skills to assist in filling this need. We are asking you to dig into your fabric stash of leftover material and get creative. We have attached three different patterns that you may choose from. The preferred pattern is the “Washable Face Mask” pattern because it has the ability to hold a filter. If you have another pattern that you want to use, that is fine as well. Again, the patterns that allow for a filter insert are preferred, but all masks can be used.

DETAILS:

  • Email Karna Dam, (kdam2@unl.edu) ASAP with your “Goal” of the number of masks you would like to make.
  • Select your pattern. Feel free to be creative in the fabric choices. I am well aware that elastic is very hard to find. You can easily make tie strings and those masks work very well and are more adjustable than elastic.
  • Get started with your project. PLEASE RECORD:
  • Average length of time it takes to make one mask.
  • Average estimated cost of materials per mask.
  • Report this information with Karna. This is IMPORTANT information as we need to submit that to Three Rivers Public Health

When complete:

  • Contact Jacki Trujillo with United Way by calling her at: 402-719-7440. She will arrange a contact-free drop off with you.
  • Report back to Karna with the actual number of masks you made and delivered.

**United Way is also putting together a pattern for gowns and surgery/bouffant caps. As soon as we have the patterns, we will post those to our website as well. If you are interested in making any of those, we will follow the same format of reporting.

Can this be a 4-H Project?

Yes, you can most certainly make this into a 4-H project.
