Is Now Medicare Time for You?

By Mary Loftis, Nebraska SHIIP Counselor

If the magic milestone of turning 65 is in your not-so-distant future you may be

wondering if now is the time to enroll in Medicare. The answer varies with each individual.

Do you or your spouse have work insurance and do you/they plan to continue to work? Are

you contributing to a Health Saving Account? Are you currently on a Healthcare

Marketplace plan or are you paying directly for your own insurance? These questions and

many, many more will be covered at the New to Medicare/Medicare Basics educational

On Thursday evening, May 2nd I will be offering a Medicare Basic Program in Blair

at the Nebraska Extension Office in Washington County at 597 Grant Street, Blair, NE.

The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. and will last about an hour and a half because I encourage questions as we go along, but there will be plenty of time afterwards to ask any personal questions you might have.

If you’d like to attend, please give the Nebraska Extension Office a call at 402-426-9455 or 402-374-2929 so we have enough copies of the materials for everyone.

Medicare Basics is part of the Nebraska Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) through the Nebraska Department of Insurance. I have been trained as a SHIIP Counselor for over 14 years and if I don’t know the answer, I know people who will!

Absolutely nothing will be sold at this program so rest assured it is just a chance for you to learn about Medicare. Anyone is welcome to attend, no matter where they live so invite your friends too.

Since the main focus of my adult programming through Extension centers on the Medicare program I have the opportunity to work with hundreds of Medicare recipients throughout the year.

In 2018, I personally worked with 366 individuals and saved them $206,400 for 2019 (mostly with their Medicare Prescription Drug Plans.) I also organized 25 Medicare Open Enrollment Events in Burt, Dodge and Washington Counties as a UNL Extension Medicare Point Person. With the help of four other SHIIP volunteers the total potential savings impact for the program this year was over $334,000 for total of 588 individuals.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to learn the basics of Medicare Thursday, May 2nd

at the Washington County Extension Office in Blair and don’t forget to pre-register by calling 402-426-9455 or 402-374-2929
