TIPS TO SAVE FOOD DOLLARS
BY DOING FOOD TASKS AT HOME
-
Cook in large amounts and freeze in smaller portions for use on
another day.
-
Buy the large size if the food can be stored and used up in a short amount
of time.
-
Making foods from scratch (homemade). It can be cheaper and more
tasty than "store-bought" convenience items.
-
Eat at home more often.
-
Plan what the kids eat for snacks. Carrot sticks and other healthy snacks
are cheaper than candy bars and similar types of snacks.
-
Control the portion sizes. Eating larger servings than they need it hurts
your waistlines and your budget!
-
Buy a whole chicken (or other types of meats) and cut it yourself.
Wrap and freeze items for how you will use them. For example:
-
chicken backs & necks for stew
-
chicken wings for "buffalo wings"
-
chicken legs and thighs for frying or baking
-
chicken breasts for casseroles
-
Grow your own vegetables.
-
Plan meals for a week and then make a shopping list. You can cut
down on trips to the grocery store and buy only what you need.
-
Know what you already have at home.
-
Check your shelves and refrigerator before making a shopping list.
