2016 Washington County Market Beef reminder- ID's due April 15,2016

MARKET BEEF IDENTIFICATION – DEADLINE APRIL 15

DEADLINE:

  • DNA envelopes and the Nebraska 4-H and FFA Market Beef Ownership Affidavits are due by APRIL 15 AT 5:00 p.m. to the Nebraska Extension Office in Washington County, Blair.
  • Any 4-H livestock identified AFTER the APRIL 15 DEADLINE DATE will be INELIGIBLE to exhibit in the 2016 livestock shows (Fremont 4-H Fair, Washington County Fair, Nebraska State Fair, and AKSARBEN 4-H Stock Show). NO EXCEPTIONS!

GENERAL INFORMATION:

  • ALL 4-H/FFA market beef are required to be identified with a 4-H/FFA EID tag.
  • Market beef are to use existing USDA official EID tags if already identified/tagged with USDA official EID tags. DO NOT REMOVE. IT IS UNLAWFUL TO REMOVE EXSISTING EID TAGS! Market animals will use the existing EID tag for that portion of the identification. However, market animals will be required to be tagged/identified with an official 4-H/FFA tag for the animal identification portion. All tags are to be obtained from the Nebraska Extension in Washington County Office.
  • In 2016, there will be NO CHARGE for the official EID tags due to a partnership with the Nebraska Department of Agriculture, the Nebraska State Fair, the Nebraska 4-H Foundation, and Nebraska FFA Foundation covering the costs.
  • The EID tag is considered as both 4-H and FFA. Therefore;
  1.   If the owner is a 4-H member, the animal is considered 4-H,
  2.  If the owner is a FFA student, the animal is considered FFA, and
  3.  If the owner is both a 4-H member and a FFA student, the animal is considered both 4-H and FFA.
  4. HOWEVER, an animal may only be exhibited at ONE county fair. Once the animal exhibits at a county fair it will NOT be eligible to exhibit at another county fair. NOTE: Fremont 4-H Fair is an invitational show and is not considered a county fair.

  • Market Beef identification limit is 10 animals per exhibitor (regardless of 4-H or FFA).
  • Market heifers identified as market beef by the April 15 deadline must remain as market and will NOT be eligible to change the identification as breeding heifers at a later date.
  • Less than ten 4-H/FFA Washington County market beef were weighed at the Dodge-Washington County 4-H/FFA Weigh Day (January 24, 2016). As a result, there will NOT be a Washington County Fair 4-H/FFA Market Beef Rate of Gain Contest. (Approved by Washington County 4-H Council, 1.11.2016)
  • 4-H/FFA families will tag, identify and/or DNA sample their own animals if they so choose. Contact the Extension Office if needing assistance.
