Following are the approved meeting minutes from the July 2022 Gosper County 4-H Council meeting:

The Gosper County 4-H community met at the Gosper County Ag Barn on Sunday, July 17, 2022 to clean the Ag Barn.  Families cleaned the pens, arena, around the building and in general – prepared the building for the upcoming County Fair 4-H livestock shows.

Four-H Council members met at the Legion Hall at 6:35 for a pre-fair meeting.  Members present were:  Chairman Rodney Buell, Vice President Codina Moore and members Paul Huggett, Joe Wendell, Kayla Helms and Brianna Hird;  staff present were Molly Brandt, Emily Shultz, Todd Whitney and Kathy Beck.  Guest: Gracey Hinson.  Dustin O’Hanlon arrived later in the meeting.  Brianna Hird had a work emergency mid meeting and left.

The meeting opened at 6:35 by Chairman Rod Buell.  The May 23 secretary report was read.  Motion to approve by Codina Moore, second by Joe Wendell, all in favor.  Motion carried.

Information was relayed to the board from Chairman Buell from the Gosper Co. Fair Board that all livestock trailers needed to be parked to the north of the parking lot during the fair. 

No Extension Board information to report from representative Codina Schutz.

The 4-H Council was very pleased with the turn out to clean the Ag Barn and the surrounding area.  Thank you to all the Gosper 4-H families for participating in the clean up.

Discussion on the Pinnacle Bank and Security First showmanship prizes that will be awarded at the 4-H Banquet in the fall.  The Gosper 4-H Banquet is scheduled for Sunday evening, Nov. 20.

Discussion on the upcoming 4-H Livestock Auction.   The livestock committee’s had no new information to share.

Discussion on Fair Planning:  new lights for the livestock ring were not installed for the 2022 fair, plans are to install for 2023.  Security lights will be rented from Allmand Brothers to be used during the county fair in the livestock area.

New Business/Gosper County Fair Discussions:

The Phelps/Gosper 4-H Horse Show was held in Elwood on Saturday, July 23.  There were 30 youth participating.

“Old Timers” award to be presented at the Gosper County Fair will be to Bruce and Michele Smith and to Paul Huggett.  A 2022 Friend of 4-H plaque will be presented to the Elwood Fire Department for their support at the November banquet.

Discussion on show order.  Suggestion to follow the program with pigs.  Awards to Overall Gilt and Overall Barrow.

Upcoming fair activities: 

Static Exhibit Entry Day is Tuesday, July 26. Release of exhibits will be on Saturday, July 30 at 3:00 p.m.  

Emily plans on making spreadsheets for livestock entries to help with weigh in on Wednesday, July 27.

Ice for the fair will be available from the Red Barn.  Bottles of water will be supplies from Aurora Coop, Orschlen’s and Ag Valley.   Bottled water will also be available for the livestock auction.

Discussion on the “I Belong Award”.  This form was put in each Family Packet for 4-H’ers to fill out and will be available at the county fair.  Molly explained that the form asks 4-H members to write about their favorite 4-H project and what they have learned about it.  Discussion on offering awards to five youth from forms submitted.  Motion by Dustin O’Hanlon to offer five $20 gift cards, second by Joe Wendell to five randomly drawn completed forms at next meeting.   All present responded aye, motion carried.  The gift cards will be handed out at the November banquet.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, August 15 at 7:00 p.m.

Motion to adjourn the meeting by Joe Wendell at 7:10 p.m., second by Paul, all in favor. Motion passed.
