Large Deciduous Trees (over 25' tall at maturity)

1. Alder, Black - Alnus glutinosa (pw+; fast grower with interesting cones; plant on moist sites only)
2. Buckeye, Ohio - Aesculus glabra (d; very adaptable Midwest native)
3. Catalpa, Northern - Catalpa speciosa (p; character tree with large tropical leaves and creamy summer flowers)
4. Coffeetree, Kentucky - Gymnocladus dioicus (dw; great native legume; beautiful winter outline)
5. Corktree, Amur - Phellodendron amurense (d; unusual tree with corky bark; tolerant of poor soils)
6. Cottonwood, Lanceleaf - Populus x acuminata (w; upright hybrid native; good on wet sites)
7. Cottonwood, Plains - Populus sargentii (w; large native good on wet sites)

14. Linden, Littleleaf - Tilia cordata (p; more pyramidal than Am. linden)
15. Locust, Black - Robinia pseudoacacia (thorny native of E. Nebraska with fragrant flowers; good on poor soils)
16. Maple, Black - Acer nigrum (p; native to Iowa; large leaves; more drought tolerant than sugar maple)
17. Maple, Boxelder - Acer negundo (dw; tough but forgotten native with many newer forms)
18. Maple, Freeman - Acer x freemanii (w; hybrid between red and silver maples; avoid high pH soils)
19. Maple, Norway - Acer platanoides (p; needs extra protection in Panhandle)
20. Maple, Red - Acer rubrum (pw; not for hot, dry sites; needs extra protection in Panhandle)
21. Maple, Sugar - Acer saccharum (p; choose cultivars appropriate for Neb. like 'Legacy', 'Green Mountain', etc.)
22. Oak, Bur - Quercus macrocarpa (dw; a great, wonderful, fantastic, large native tree - the best!)
23. Oak, Chinkapin - Quercus muehlenbergii (native to limestone soils in e. Neb.; needs further testing)
24. Oak, English - Quercus robur (avoid high pH soils; many forms including very upright and narrow types)
25. Oak, Red - Quercus rubra (pw; native to e. Nebraska; reliable fall color)
26. Poplar, Silver - Populus alba (d; large, spreading tree with white bark and silvery leaves; good on tough sites)
27. Walnut, Black - Juglans nigra (pw; several nice specimens in Panhandle)
