Nebraska Summer Reading Program

Build a Better World - Through reading stories and hands on experiences  youth will discover more about  Science, Technology Engineering & Math (STEM).    

Youth can take part in 3 sessions in June at the Dakota City Library from 3:00 to4:30 P.M.

  • June 8th - Heart of the Community 
    Through participating in a community scavenger hunt and an interactive community mapping project, youth will identify goods and services offered in their community.  This activity will help youth learn about the assets located in the heart of their communities and think through ways to make their communities even better.
  • June 15th - Laparoscopic Surgery
    Youth will work in teams as surgical residents using surgical instrument they designed to complete tasks that are inside of a box, hidden from direct view - a setup similar to laparoscopic surgery.,  They are able to see inside of the box with the help of a "laparoscope" (iPad or webcam).  This engaging activity show youth one application of engineered medical instrumentation.
  • July 6th - The Health of Our World
    The total land on our planet is only about 1/4 of the Earth's total survace.  This activity will heighten youth's awareness of littering and decomposition rates and the importance of taking care of the "health" of our world.

All activities employ the 4-H pledge which is a key component of every 4-H event.  It was written in 1927 and still holds true today.
