Extension Publications Up for Review

This week we are releasing the list (http://extension.unl.edu/Extension_Publications-July_2008_Review_List.pdf) of Extension publications up for review this year. Department heads will receive this final list via email; a copy also has been posted to the Extension Publications Archive Web site at http://ianrpubsarchive.unl.edu/. (Use IANR as the password to access the list.) This list includes NebFacts released before 2005 and NebGuides released or last revised before 2003.

Beginning with the current review cycle, all Extension publication categories, including extension circulars (ECs) and regional (RPs) and North Central Region (NCR) publications, will come up for review every five years, just as NebGuides do. Many of these publications, excluding NebGuides, may only be available in print. Copies will be distributed to department heads and will be available from the CIT publications warehouse for review. If a printed publication is approved for continued distribution, the title and description will be added to our Web site to make it easier for the public to find and order it.

The process for reviewing and recycling or revising publications is the same as in previous years. Please submit any revisions or requests to keep a publication in the system by using a Movement of Copy and the existing approval process. These should be submitted by Nov. 1 to avoid any lapses in availability.

The publications on this list will be removed from distribution via the Web and/or warehouse Jan. 5, 2009. For information on resubmitting any of these titles as minor or major revisions, see the Publications Guidelines at http://www.extension.unl.edu/web/Extension/PubsGraphicsWeb/PubGuidelines. If you have any questions about a particular publication or the process, contact Lisa Jasa, CIT publications manager, at 472-7981.

West Nile Virus
(E. Kim Cassel, University of South Dakota)

As we approach peak season for West Nile Virus transmission and time being spent outdoors, there is a West Nile Virus Issue Page on the EDEN website – http://www.eden.lsu.edu/ This page is also useful as many are concerned about the relationship between flooding and the increased mosquitoes being seen in these communities/states. The direct link to the Issue Page is -- http://www.eden.lsu.edu/Issues_View.aspx?IssueID=862aab6c-f161-4333-a08e-28a0c57dab55

Local or community control programs are critical for reducing mosquito numbers and the risk for transmission of the virus; however, this is only part of the equation as the best protection comes from individuals taking personal responsibility to reduce their risk by eliminating breeding areas around the home and farm, limiting time outdoors and using mosquito repellents.

Flood Related Information

Colleagues, MU Extension has compiled several different publications into one publication for ease of use. The document is called “Resources for Your Flooded Home” and it takes some of the best work by MU Extension as well as other land-grant universities and combines them into one 25+ page PDF document that anyone can download and print. Currently our county offices in affected areas will be printing this for use wherever it is needed, but don’t hesitate to do the same as you see fit. It can be found at http://extension.missouri.edu/cemp/flood.html

Daughter/Mother Camp Oct. 10-11, 2008 at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center (Revised from the June 2008 Keeping Up release)

A retreat designed for sixth-grade girls and their mothers (or grandmothers or other adult females), “Strengthening Family Treasures: Daughter/Mother Camp,” will be presented Friday, Oct. 10, 5 p.m., to Saturday, Oct. 11, 5 p.m., at the Eastern Nebraska 4-H Center near Gretna.

This camp is two days and one night of fun, educational and confidence building activities. It is an opportunity for mothers with middle school daughters to enhance effective communication, learn more about body image and sexuality, explore techniques to handle peer pressure and discuss the importance of individual family values.

Registration is $125 per pair. Cost includes meals, snacks, lodging and program materials.

A survey of participants at earlier camps indicated 100% of the daughters and mothers gained a better understanding of differing personalities and 90% better understand the types of pressures teenagers experience. Mothers said they were thankful that presenters were not afraid to talk about uncomfortable topics and also indicated they plan to set aside more time to talk to their daughters about “what-if scenarios.”

A past participant said, “I really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the outdoors and private time with my daughter. The games and activities helped me see more of my daughter’s view. All was enlightening and jam packed. Lots of quality information in two days!”

Additional information and registration form is available on-line at http://lancaster.unl.edu/family/DaMoCmpF08.pdf or by calling Maureen Burson at (402) 441-7180 (Lincoln) or Mary Nelson at (402) 444-7804 (Omaha).

The retreat is sponsored by University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension.
