Recent Travel

The Extension Administrative team has made several visits to Extension Offices recently and will continue to do so throughout the summer. We feel that it is important for us to visit with faculty and staff in their work environment and our goal is to try and get into most of the offices this year. We have no set agenda for these visits and want to spend most of the available time listening to successes as well as learning about current issues and trends.

The visits I have participated in have been very productive and feedback from other members of the administrative team has also been very positive. I extend thanks to the offices we have visited, and I am looking forward to the remaining visits that we have scheduled

In addition to office visits, I am continuing to work on responsibilities associated with chairing the Extension Committee on Policy and Organization (ECOP). Last week the ECOP Leadership Advisory Council met and had discussions regarding accountability. I think UNL Extension is well positioned around this issue, but there are some areas where we could do better. While we work on many similar Extension education programs across the state, we sometimes use different measures of success limiting the amount of aggregation that can occur. I am of the opinion that in selected areas we need more common indicators of how educational programs do make a difference. If possible we also need to think more about the economic impact of our work. I am confident that we have the skills and abilities to continue to help lead the extension system in accountability.

I also spent some time in Washington, D.C., last week visiting with leaders from the Office of Management and Budget. Again accountability surfaced as a key discussion point. Because of faculty and staff contributions to our EARS system, I was able to share some of our successes in measuring and reporting Extension impacts . We also talked about key issues that are being addressed and as well as some of issues that we are beginning to work on now. The people we visited with seemed to have a sincere interest in what Extension work is and the difference we make. During the same time frame, I also visited with USDA Under Secretary Gale Buchanan and shared some national extension priorities and needs.

It was good to be in D.C. again, but it was even better to return home. Your dedication, your commitment to excellence, and your focus on issues of critical importance makes a difference to the individuals, families, and communities that we serve. Thank you for helping make Nebraska a premier Extension system.

State Fair Planning

With the Nebraska State Fair moving to Grand Island in 2010, there will be new opportunities for Nebraska 4-H. To begin the planning process, an ad hoc group that represents the breadth of Extension will 'dream some big dreams' about how we want 4-H at the Nebraska State Fair to look. Over the next 6-9 months, an ad hoc committee with Dr. Alan Baquet as facilitator will develop concepts for the new look of 4-H at the State Fair. Based on the concepts developed, a strategic planning ad hoc team will work on turning the dreams into reality. The goal is to have a plan in place for the 2009 State Fair so people can get a vision of what they might experience in Grand Island.
Members of the 'dream team' ad hoc group are:

Jeff Bassford
Dennis Bauer
Brian Bosshamer
Mary Jacobson
Cathy Johnston
Peggy Jeffries
Tracy Pracheil
Rick Rasby
Mark Simmons
David Smith
Kris Spath
Diane Vigna
Troy Walz

Kathleen Lodl and Beth Birnstihl will serve as 'staffers' to the committee to listen and provide information but not formally participate in the discussion.

If you have questions, please give me or Beth a call.

May/June Computing Tip: Tips for Taking Better Photos

Digital cameras are great tools, but it's still challenging to get that "just right picture." Remember, it's not the camera that makes beautiful photos; it's the photographer.
