Comments From the Dean:
Congratulations!
Drew Lyon recently was honored by receiving the first Fenster Professor of Dryland Agriculture. Charlie and Eunice Fenster have generously provided the endowment for this professorship which is the first established professorship for an IANR faculty member at an off-campus center.
Congratulations to Drew!
Public Issues Leadership Development Conference
Mary Ann Holland, Tim Lemmons, Lisa Poppe, Cynthia Strasheim, Rita Hogsett (President of Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards) and Joanne Marsh (Vice President NACEB), and I attended the Public Issues Leadership Development (PILD) Conference in Washington, D.C. on April 28 - 30. The PILD planning committee put together a really good program with some great presentations/learning opportunities. On Wednesday, April 30, many of the PILD attendees made congressional office visits. With the exception of me, our group visited all the Nebraska Congressional Offices. Tim Lemmons prepared a handout highlighting some key accomplishments of UNL Extension that was shared during the office visits.
As chair of the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP), I along with representatives of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, visited the National Association of County Officials (NACO) and shared ECOP goals and programs with the NACO Executive Director. We explored some opportunities for collaboration where we have common goals and objectives.
I also spent a day in Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) pursing opportunities for Extension to be more involved in the National Research Initiative. I am pleased that Beth and Kathleen's colleagues from the North Central Region are meeting at CSREES in June with the purpose of helping CSREES gain a better appreciation of the Extension work and the impacts we are making, as well as learn more about what is on the horizon nationally. I am also pleased the Rick Koelsch and his counterparts across the region will be meeting at CSREES this fall with the goal of getting better acquainted with National Program Leaders who lead the NRI.

Note: While many items in this feature are suitable for use in newsletters, etc., today’s item is intended for faculty/staff information. This is an abbreviated form of the information. A more detailed set of information will be sent to the All County listserve.
Recruitment Continues—Although the application deadline for Fall Semester 2008 has passed, the need to recruit students continues.
What can you do to help? For students who have applied and been accepted to UNL and who have paid the enrollment deposit, there are several things you can encourage them to do:
1. Sign up for a New Student Enrollment (NSE) date. They can sign up for their NSE date through their WAM account (http://wam.unl.edu). NSE information is located at http://nse.unl.edu/
2. Submit a Housing contract. Students can again submit their contract through their WAM account. Information about housing can be found athttp://housing.unl.edu/
3. Join ClubRed! Admitted students have all been invited to participate in this special social network just for them. If they have questions about ClubRed, they can contact their Admissions Counselor. (If you need help with this, please let me know.)
4. Invite them to ask any questions they may have about UNL and their upcoming new student experience. How you can reach me:
- ltooker2@unl.edu (UNL faculty and staff)
- lilatooker.admissions@unl.edu (Students and parents)
- 402-472-6680 (Everyone!)
Thanks for all your help this year, and let’s continue to show students why they will want to be part of the Power of Red!

Connecting with eXtension
eXtension provides a calendar that faculty can use to advertise an event or program on the home page of any appropriate Community of Practice. Registered users can go to http://events.extension.org/events and "Add an Event". The event can be visible to all users or to only those users from a specific state (or group of states). With a two-minute investment in time, you can promote your extension programs to a national, regional, or state-specific audience with eXtension.
Here are three additional links you may want to copy to your county and subject matter Web site...
eXtension - Wildlife Damage Management
The eXtension Web site Wildlife Damage Management Community (http://www.extension.org/wildlife+damage+management) mission is to assist individuals with the complex decision process involving balancing human and wildlife concerns. The authors include nationally recognized wildlife biologists, nuisance wildlife control experts, and educators.
eXtension - Map@syst
The eXtension Web site Map@syst resource team (http://www.extension.org/geospatial+technology) provides Internet visitors with a single source of reliable and up-to-date information on geospatial technologies, frequently asked questions, and access to science based peer reviewed articles and guides.
eXtension - Family Caregiving
The eXtension Family Caregiving Web site (http://www.extension.org/family+caregiving) strives to become the “go-to educational web site” for family caregivers as they seek answers to their questions and needs. The site provides science-based information and learning opportunities.

EARS Report Tips
As you’re writing EARS reports, please keep in mind the following:
● EARS reports are brief summaries of your program’s accomplishments, focusing on impacts and outcomes. They should report how Nebraskans have benefited from the educational program, workshop or field day.
● Your primary audience is external -- decision-makers and everyday Nebraskans who want a quick summary of how your program benefited the public. They do not know jargon, abbreviations or program names, so please eliminate as many of those as you can.
● Clearly identify University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension’s involvement early in your report, particularly if you have partnered with another organization or company for the project.
● EARS reports should be no more than two pages long. Not every comment or activity needs to be listed. The impact comes from the evaluations or reports of the participants, not the list of activities.
● Make sure you note the time frame of the event, i.e. “held in April 2008” or “over the last three years” or “once a year for the last five years.”

Vegetative Treatment Systems for Feedlots and Cow-calf Operations Tour
As regulators begin to scrutinize our smaller beef operations, Vegetative Treatment Systems are the mostly likely solutions to minimizing environmental risk. A Vegetative Treatment System is an alternative waste management system to a holding pond, a technology that Extension has been demonstrating and developing since 2000. If you work with small feedlots or cow-calf producers, this is your chance to see these types of systems in operation on working farms. Please consider attending this tour especially if you interact with feedlot operations under 1,000 head. If you do not work with feedlots or cow-calf operations, then please consider passing this information on to an interested producer. It is a rare opportunity to see first-hand some of the new practices that will become available to producers in coming years. Consider inviting a local leader, such as the president of the local cattlemen’s association, to join you on the tour.
The program strives to offer a tour every 2-3 years of recently installed demonstration projects. This year we have a very diverse group of projects. Of special interest with this tour is the first demonstration of a sprinkler VTS. We have designed the only two known such systems in the United States. Also a first is a cow-calf application of a VTS to a pasture based system, a very novel concept. The tour will be conducted on June 3 and repeated again on June 5 (9-4 each day). Registration is on-line at http://afo.unl.edu, and there is no cost for the tour.
If you have questions please don’t hesitate to contact us. Chris Henry, chenry1@unl.edu, (402) 472-6529, Jason Gross, jgross3@unl.edu, (308) 865-1594
