Comments From the Dean:
Congratulations
Deana Namuth was selected as a recipient of the 2007 IANR Dinsdale Family Faculty Award. This award is presented to those who provide outstanding teaching, research and outreach in IANR. Other Dinsdale Family Faculty Award recipients were Kathy Hanford (Statistics) and Amalia Yiannaka (Ag Economics). A special IANR Awards Luncheon was held on April 21. Congratulations to all the award recipients.
AgrAbility and Farm Safety
UNL Extension has been a partner with Easter Seals Nebraska on an AgrAbility project for more than a decade. On the most recent AgrAbility grant that we received in 2006, Drs. Ron Yoder and Alan Baquet have served as co-principal investigators and provisions were made in the grant to hire a part-time extension educator to help lead the educational program. Even with a lengthy search process, a suitable candidate was not found.
Concurrently, with the AgrAbility search process, Dave Morgan, who has been leading the farm safety program on a part time basis, returned to the Nebraska Tractor Test Lab on a full-time basis. After several discussions, I am pleased to announce that Sharry Nielsen and Bill Booker are both going to focus about 35 percent of their time on AgrAbility and farm safety education. Approximately 2/3 of their 35 percent focus will be on AgrAbility and the remaining 1/3 will be on farm safety. I am pleased that Sharry and Bill have accepted these opportunities. Dr. Yoder will remain the principal investigator on the AgrAbility grant and will assist on coordination of the farm safety education program.
I also want to express thanks to Dave Morgan for his work in farm safety, especially considering he went to the Tractor Test Lab on a full-time basis last July. Dave will continue to do the 4-H/FFA Tractor Operator Contest.

Student Loans in the News — You may have heard one of the recent news reports about growing concern in Congress over whether or not student education lenders will be able to provide enough student loans to meet the anticipated national demand this fall. There is no reason for concern if you plan to enroll at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because we participate in the Federal Direct Lending program. The impact of a potential student loan shortage is limited exclusively to students enrolling at colleges or universities that do not participate in the Federal Direct Lending program. eXtension Update
eXtension currently has 26 Communities of Practice. Recently, the four extension regions and the 1890s institutions each proposed a new CoP for which they will take the lead. Those new CoPs address Drinking Water; Families, Food and Fitness; Meat Goat Industry; Extension Wildfire Information Network; and Sustainable Ag Energy. If faculty would like to contribute to any of these CoPs, this is an excellent time to share that interest. Let me know of your interest and I will help you make the connection with the appropriate CoP leaders.
