Assistant Dean Announcement

I'm very pleased to announce Kathleen Lodl, currently our UNL Extension Specialist in 4-H Youth Development, has accepted the position of Assistant Dean of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension.

Kathleen starts her new position March 15, pending Regents approval. Her emphasis will be Extension program leadership for youth and family programs.

A member of our Extension faculty since 1992, this past year Kathleen served as an Extension administrative intern. Part of her duties included working with the Family, Youth and Community Partners, a 35-member team of statewide stakeholders who are responsible for advocating for UNL youth and family programs.

In her career, Kathleen has secured over $2,365,000 in grant funding. She led the Medicare Part D Education Project to reach Nebraska's elderly with information on the Medicare Prescription Drug Program. Nebraska ranks fourth in the nation for percentage of Medicare beneficiaries enrolled.

Other programs Kathleen has led range from Big Red Summer Camps to Workforce Preparation Programs and include the 4-H Tobacco Program that resulted in 58 counties receiving additional resources to conduct tobacco-free programming.

Kathleen is research chair of the Nebraska Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; a reviewer for the Journal of Extension; and recipient of several awards, including the 2007 Ruth O'Brian Project Award for youth development evaluation from the National Association of Family and Consumer Sciences; the Annie E. Casey Family Strengthening Award for UNL for Families from the National 4-H Council; and the Distinguished Service Award from the National Association of Extension 4-H Agents.

Please join me in welcoming Kathleen Lodl to our Extension administrative leadership team.

Holling Family Award Program for Teaching Excellence

The Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources is proud of its reputation for teaching excellence and is continually striving to improve its quality. The Holling Family Award Program for Teaching Excellence in Agriculture and Natural Resources provides four Senior Faculty Awards, one Junior Faculty Award, and two Teaching Assistant Awards in 2008 to recognize exceptional teaching, including Extension teaching.

The Holling Family Award Program for Teaching Excellence was made possible by a gift from the Holling family to honor their pioneer parents. John Holling was a 1912 electrical engineering graduate of the University and his brother, Gustave Holling, attended the College of Agriculture before farming the family's land in the Wood River area.

The following recipients for the 2007-2008 academic year will receive their awards on Wednesday, March 12, at 3:30 p.m. in the Nebraska East Union. A reception will follow the ceremony.

Senior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (includes $5,000 stipend) recipients:
James Brandle, School of Natural Resources
Tom Dorn, Southeast Research & Extension Center
Richard Sutton, Department of Agronomy and Horticulture
Gary Zoubek, Southeast Research & Extension Center

Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (includes $3,000 stipend) recipient:
Jennifer Rees, Southeast Research & Extension Center

Teaching Assistant Award (includes $1,000 stipend) recipients:
Tierney Brosius, Department of Entomology
Joel Lechner, Department of Biochemistry

The recognition event is sponsored by Alpha Zeta. We hope you will be able to join us.

Nebraska Celebrates eXtension

eXtension officially launched last month from Washington, D.C. Now our Extension administration team is eager to recognize UNL Extension specialists who have provided significant leadership to eXtension. We invite your participation in this celebration.

At the state level, the IANR Vice Chancellor’s Council will host a recognition celebration at 2:30 p.m. (central) March 17 in the Arbor Suite at the Nebraska East Union. If you are on campus, be sure to stop by for refreshments, demonstrations, eXtension displays and the opportunity to register for eXtension. If you are unable to join us, I invite you to tune in at http://real.unl.edu/cit/exkick.shtml or http://real.unl.edu/cit (this will be archived for later viewing).

We encourage your participation to recognize eXtension on March 17 as well as throughout the month of March. See the March 3 email
(http://extension.unl.edu/Nebraska_Celebrates_eXtension.pdf) from me for my suggestions.

At the March 17 event, UNL Extension specialists will briefly discuss their roles in eXtension: Kathy Anderson, horses; Rick Rasby, beef cattle; Rick Koelsch, livestock and poultry environmental learning center; Scott Hygnstrom, wildlife damage management; and Shirley Niemeyer, EDEN (Extension Disaster Education Network). Dan Cotton of Nebraska, eXtension Director, will provide an overview of this interactive learning environment.

My thanks as well to the many other individuals who have contributed to eXtension in various ways and for all who have registered for eXtension.

I look forward to your support of eXtension.org either in the Arbor Suites at 2:30 March 17, or by distance at http://real.unl.edu/cit/exkick.shtml or http://real.unl.edu/cit.

Updates on At Work for Nebraska flyers

Just over a year ago the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources released an independent study done by Battelle of Columbus, Ohio, that discussed the Institute's value to our state. A key message from the At Work for Nebraska study is that IANR provides a conservative 15-to-1 return on each state tax dollar invested with us.

Several products, including summaries, flyers, a newsletter, DVD, and IANR Conversations have been developed to help tell the story of how IANR benefits Nebraskans and Nebraska. They are available at: http://atworkfornebraska.unl.edu.

Last Friday's monthly mailing included a copy of the At Work for Nebraska DVD and a letter about the DVD from NU Vice President and IANR Harlan Vice Chancellor John Owens.

In addition, Cheryl Alberts has updated the At Work flyers on the “At Work” Web site to provide 2007 figures and benefits for many programs. The four flyers focus on overall IANR benefits, agricultural benefits, natural resources benefits, and youth, families and communities benefits. These updated flyers replace those available in the past year; when using the flyers, please use the ones currently on the Web site.

A fifth flyer, "From the Report," is a summary of the report and also available.

These updates are available at http://atworkfornebraska.unl.edu for your use in helping tell how IANR is "at work for Nebraska."

ESI Curriculum Status Update

Last week was an exciting week for ESI as the National Entrepreneurship Week Summit spent an entire day focusing on entrepreneurship in Nebraska and highlighted the ESI curriculum. For those not able to view this broadcast, you may view the archive on-line at http://www.nationaleweek.com/summit/summit-thursday. The archive has been broken down into smaller segments with the agenda included so you may select your specific area of interest. Please note that there have been some minor technical difficulties so currently this broadcast is not available, but it will be soon.

Now for an update on the status of the curriculum -- ESI: Discover the E-Scene (Unit 1) and ESI: The Case of ME (Unit 2) are now available for distribution at the CIT Warehouse. Other parts of the curriculum series -- ESI: Your Business Inspection (Unit 3) and the ESI Leader’s Guide -- are in the final edit stage and will be available soon.

For counties that ordered through the ESI Pre-Press Order, we will hold the orders until all manuals are available for distribution. If you wish to have your Unit 1 and Unit 2 orders mailed now, please send an email to Jean Swanson, 4-H Curriculum Coordinator, at jswanson8@unl.edu and we will coordinate with the CIT Warehouse to make sure your order is shipped now rather than waiting for the entire series. Questions may be directed to Jean Swanson at the email address listed above or by calling (402) 472-9184.
