Comments From the Dean:
Happy New Year!!!
While 2007 was a really good year with lots of successes and accomplishments, I am certain that 2008 will be even better. The opportunities for making differences for individuals, families and communities across Nebraska are simply huge. Our continued focus on professional develop strategies like "Coaching Skills" and "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" have positioned many of you to become even better in helping people make more informed decisions while being mindful of the importance of your personal well being. Many of you will know that Habit 1 (Be Proactive) is the habit of choice - we are free to choose our response in any circumstance. Coaching teaches about putting people at choice - allowing them the opportunity to choose their direction. Both of these skills come early in the workshops because they are critical to success and effectiveness. Keep in mind that they refer to you and your well being. You get to 'carry your own weather.'
On a completely different subject - as some of you know, I became chair of the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) in November of 2007. ECOP is part of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant College's committee structure and comprises 15 extension directors and administrators from across the country. I am very honored to lead this group and hope that I will represent you and Nebraska very well. I thought it might be useful to share the 2008 ECOP goals (http://extension.unl.edu/2008_ECOPgoals.pdf).
The ECOP assignment will take some time, but the travel will not be as rigorous as what I experienced the last two years. One reason that I agreed to the ECOP assignment is because of my confidence in you. Clearly, UNL Extension is one of the best extension systems in the country. We have focused on educational programs that are of benefit to our audiences and we have worked diligently on reporting changes our clientele have made that have enhanced their economic, social and environmental well being. We continually show our 21st century relevance and responsiveness though a variety of strategies that keep us in touch with stakeholders and university colleagues. I am very proud of you and am honored to be a part of UNL Extension. Again best wishes for 2008.

The scholarship application is located on the NCEA Web site, http://ncea.unl.edu. Click on "scholarship application" and "Save as a target”. The completed application may be returned electronically or as a hard copy. NebGuides and NebFacts Removed From Distribution Jan. 2
A group of Extension publications were removed from public distribution Jan. 2, as part of our ongoing program to review and either delete or revise NebGuides every five years. A deletion list is available on the Extension Publications Archive at http://ianrpubsarchive.unl.edu/Jan_2008_Extension_Publication_Update. This list refers to printed publications which may be in your inventory or file cabinets. These are now considered out-of-date and should be recycled. Note, however, that some of these publication titles were revised (or are in the process of being revised) and new editions may be available on the Web at the Extension Publications Web site at http://extension.unl.edu/publications. Publications available on the Web site are considered current. Remember too that NebFacts up for revision will be brought back with a new number and published as NebGuides.
