Comments From the Dean:
Keeping Up Schedule
Thanks to all who responded to me with comments on the production schedule for Keeping Up. With overwhelming support, beginning with this issue of Keeping Up, we will move to a biweekly schedule. The next Keeping Up will be February 6, 2008.
ABN Annual Meeting
The annual Ag Builders of Nebraska (ABN) meeting was held Wednesday, January 16, 2008. The focus of the presentation from IANR was on why ABN members should feel proud of IANR faculty and how IANR faculty are not only working on issues of concern in Nebraska but are also helping set the national agenda. During the day, presentations were made by Deans Cunningham, Dickey, Kostelnik and Waller; NU Vice President and IANR Vice Chancellor John Owens; Chancellor Harvey Perlman; President J.B. Milliken; Mike Jess; and Brad Lubben. About 30 senators participated in the luncheon program. New 2008 officers for ABN are: Mike Jacobson, President, and Roger Wehrbein, Vice President.

4-H New Employee Orientation/Training Dates Set
The annual 4-H New Employee Orientation/Training will be held in Lincoln April 2-4, 2008. We anticipate starting mid morning on the 2nd and going until mid afternoon on the 4th. We will cover a variety of topics necessary for staff to be prepared for managing their 4-H Youth Development Program. All staff and faculty who work with 4-H in any way and have been hired since April 2007 are welcome to attend. All expenses for all participants will be covered by extension. More details will follow, including an agenda, location, and registration information.
Please notify all new employees in your units now, or as they are hired, about this opportunity. If you have questions, contact Doug Swanson at 402-472-1762 or dswanson8@unl.edu

The Leadership/Citizenship Workgroup, which is part of the 4-H Youth Development Action Team, has planned a 4-H Staff and Volunteer Training on April 8, 2008. This training will give staff the resources to help challenge youth to lead with confidence and increase their skills. Become competent in teaching the Step Up to Leadership curriculum while experiencing activities for relationship building, communication, group processes and planning/organizing. Participants will also learn about the resources available through the Great Fans. Great Sports program over lunch. For registration information see the 4-H Web page or http://www.lincolnmcpherson.unl.edu/progs/Leadership%20Curriculum%20Training.

Shipping Costs for 4-H Publications:
This reminder is a follow up to the announcement made during January In-service regarding the shipping costs for 4-H publications from the CIT Warehouse. There was a pool of money set aside to pay for the shipping costs to county offices. This money has been depleted so starting February 1, 2008; the cost for shipping 4-H publications will be incurred by the county office. If you wish to coordinate pick up of 4-H curriculum, then note this in the comments section of C-Pow when placing an order. In this section, please indicate that the order will be picked up and list the date of pick up.
2007-2008 Pick-a-Project:
Based upon your feedback, we have decided to re-order the 2007-2008 Pick-a-Project publication. I have compiled the emails received from county offices regarding additional Pick-a-Projects needed and will forward this to the CIT Warehouse for shipping once the material has been received. We ask that you would consider your future use of this publication and when appropriate, please direct to the online version which is available at http://4h.unl.edu/pdf/2007_08pickaproject.pdf.
ESI Curriculum:
Thank you for your Pre-Press Orders of the ESI curriculum. This curriculum is in the final revision stages and will be going to print shortly. We are anticipating the printed manuals will be delivered in the end of February, if not before.

CNMP/Soil Fertility In-Service
The annual CNMP/Soil Fertility in-service will be held on January 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. via distance learning technologies (Breeze). The in-service is for anyone interested in manure management. The schedule this year highlights the following topics: 1) concerns about hormone usage in animal feeding operations and how it relates to water quality, 2) considerations when applying effluent through irrigation equipment, 3) nontraditional soil amendments, 4) current fertilizer prices and the outlook for the future, and 5) slow release nitrogen fertilizers. Registration is encouraged. For those who have not yet registered, contact Leslie Johnson, project coordinator, at (402) 584-3818.

Outdated Extension Publications
Printed copies of extension publications that were deleted from the extension publications Web site January 2 and listed in a previous Keeping Up need to be removed from your inventory and destroyed (recycled). These are no longer available on the Web and print copies should not be distributed. Last week's publication list said to "delete" rather than "destroy" the titles listed.

2008 Master Conservationist Program Announced
Copies of the brochure on the 2008 Master Conservationist recognition program have been distributed to all extension offices, regional centers and departments. The brochure also is available in electronic form at this http://www.ianr.unl.edu/ianr/mc-brochure.pdf site. Copies of news materials for local announcements–news release, radio script and a newsletter/column or electronic mail item--have been sent via e-mail to each Extension office. Entries are needed in all categories, particularly youth individual and group, residence/acreage and production agriculture in District B. Nominations now can be made online by visiting owh.com and clicking on the “In the Community” link. The deadline for entries is April 1, 2008. The Master Conservationist program has been sponsored since 1983 by the UNL Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources and the Omaha World-Herald. Members of IANR, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Natural Resources Districts and the Nebraska Association of Resources Districts judge the entries. The program provides an opportunity to recognize Nebraskans of all ages in urban and rural areas who have excelled in the use of new and traditionally acknowledged methods of soil and water conservation.

Women In Agriculture Conference and Youth Scholarship Opportunities
The 23rd Women in Agriculture Conference: The Heart of the Farm will be held Thursday and Friday, February 21-22, 2008 at the Kearney Holiday Inn. Registration brochures are being sent to each of the Extension offices across the state and I am requesting your assistance in getting the word out to the farm/ranch women in your area.
For the second time, the UNL College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources is investing in our youth by paying half of the registration fees for 4-H, FFA, and Community College students. This year’s registration fee is $90, however, with CASNR’s support, we are offering a discounted registration fee of $45 to high school and community college ag students who are interested and are recommended by their instructors or extension staff. Dean Steve Waller and CASNR has generously offered to provide this support to the first 20 students who register for the conference. In addition, 5 current CASNR students will receive a full scholarship to the conference. A scholarship application form can be found at wia.unl.edu. Scholarship applications are due February 8th.
If you have a weekly column in your local newspapers, please mention this educational program, the dates, student scholarship and the 800 phone number. If you need additional copies of the brochure, please contact me or you can print them from wia.unl.edu. Brochures are also being sent to past participants of Women in Ag, to commercial banks and to the media.
Thank you for your continued support of Nebraska WIA! If you have any questions, please contact me at mvoss2@unl.edu, 402.472.0079 or 800.535.3456.
